Crew Hall by Rupert - Thu 15th Apr 2004, 11:00am
I need your suggestions for what to do about crew hall this may term, given we can't use the minstrel's gallery. Can we find a room near the kitchens? Or how about a picnic??

Why can't we use the Minstrel's Gallery?

How about "Crew Afternoon Tea" at about 5pm or so ?? instead of Crew Hall at 9pm.

You can't have people eating just before they go rowing, it's a recipe for disaster and if Hugh is in the boat excessive flatulence

Eating after exercise is important to regenerate blood glucose levels and generally maintain a good state of health. It also prevents back injuries.Crew Hall is not a frivolous social engagement. How can we expect college to continue providing it if it is perceived as such?

Is some kind of composite solution possible - the private supply room when it is free and then using the rooms of those people who live on Great Court and New Court up to a maximum of one visit per room per week. This might mean we missed out some of the time but it would be much better than nothing.

I think you should just block-book the upstairs room at the Maypole for the whole of term. Nothing like an all-day breakfast at 9pm.

if i carted all the wine to my room for say a nominal fee of £100, then by the end of term the charge for moving it all back would probably only by £50 (depending on attendance at my parties), thereby the college are effectively saving £50 and my revision will pass a little less painfully. sorted.

Would this idea have come from your *brilliant* plan to "store" the wine we won at Cardinals in your room? Are we ever going to see that drink again?

Interesting idea...nice food and I bet they'd give us a discount if we went everyday...£4 a day?

I think crew hall costs grads between 3.00 and 3.50 a day... so it's not that different!

But if we did decide to opt out, we'd have to persuade college to give crew hall undergrads a kfc reduction to compensate. Doesn't sound too likely.

Does anyone know what other colleges do for crew hall?

Christ's have crew hall. They eat it in their canteen bit, where all normal meals are eaten.

Dan and i got a porter to show us what's in the minstrel's gallery. There's not much wine, but loads of kitchen stuff. They use it to prepare drinks and nibbles (I presume) for the fellows who are using the Allhusen and OCR. I'm sure they could create a small space for us, so i'm trying to argue our case with Reinhardt.
by Rupert - Wed 21st Apr 2004, 2:45pm
Right - final verdict is we'll have crew hall in... the bar! Reinhardt is going to move a microwave and everything over there soon, but we will have to wait until monday before it starts. I think this is about as good as we're going to get, and it shouldn't get too busy in the bar this term. Hope this satisfies everybody and thanks for your suggestions.

Wouldn't the BA rooms be a bit better than the bar? There's a kitchen and a proper table in there, and I expect it'll be quieter than the bar at about 8, especially towards the end of the week.

The BA society wouldn't necessarily be very happy about it though. There would be more of a case for using the JCR, as everyone in the boat club is a member of the JCR. Not everyone is in the BA society...

I think they want it in the bar, firstly because they have hot plate, microwave and can store plates & cutlery there but also so they can keep an eye on us!

Where can we play chin up chicken in the bar ?

Surely the appropriately-gendered squad (i.e. the one on earlies) could knock up a tasty spread atbh by the time the others get off the water? If it's good enough for bcd...
by Dubya - Fri 23rd Apr 2004, 10:38am
Just need to make sure we don't get shoved in the bar again next year - this had better not set a precedent! |
