1st & 3rd vs BPBC by FAT BOY - Fri 23rd Nov 2001, 11:52am
Black Prince Boat Club - comprising FaT old boys, have 2 VIIIs entered in Fairbairns.
I have two prizes up for grabs! I'll award a bottle of wine (no promises regarding quality but it won't be the cheapest I can find) to the person who most closely predicts the time deficit of BPBC I to the FaT 1st VIII over the Fairbairns course. Secondly (this is more difficult), another bottle of wine (cheaper!) to the person who most closely predicts the difference between the two clubs of the combined 1st and 2nd VIII times. My conditions are that the BPBC crew lists are declared (could someone enlighten us? Our 2nd VIII crew list will be on-line as soon as it is decided), and it would be useful to have some idea of what equipment you will be using.... Everyone's final prediction made between now and exactly 2 hours before the 1st race will be considered!

This from an Old Buffer (Graham Reid):
Dear young whipper snapper, careful with use of the word "deficit"........ BPBC should be assured that I chose my words very carefully! Nor is 'young whipper snapper' something I am called all that often ;-)

After seeing the "current crop of 1st & 3rd talent", I admit I'll have to revise my thoughts.
BPBC I bt 1+3 I by 5 seconds BPBC combined win by 20 seconds
by Dubya - Mon 26th Nov 2001, 1:40pm
I predict that BPBC I will lose to Boar's Head, which is pretty shameful really. Who cares how they do relative to 1st & 3rd?
by mcp - Mon 26th Nov 2001, 1:51pm
You would, if you fancy winning a bottle of wine or two... ;-)

1st and 3rd by 10s (the pies starting to show on the BPBC boys during the reach) in the 1st VIII's, and 13s overall - the 2nd VIII are going to fly over the water....

BPBC can now proudly reveal its 1st and 2nd VIIIs, a helpful indication to those who wish to compete in the bottles of wine sweepstake:
1st VIII (from cox, then stroke-bow): Carbonell, Robson (Stephen), Darley, Dewire, Fisher A, Rose, Reid (Graham), Backhouse, Ingram 2nd VIII (from cox, then stroke-bow): Evans, Micklethwaite, Ponsonby, Bevan, Blackburn, Leake, Hogley, Fisher G, Crawford. We would also like to point out that we are aware that BHBC and Gonville have the capacity to put out quick VIIIs, and still fully intend to give them a good shoeing.

FaT I to beat BPBC by 15 seconds.
FaT Combined to lose by 5 seconds

hmmmmm... FaT I to beat BPBC I by 13s
FaT combined to beat BPBC combined by 14s
by Dubya - Wed 28th Nov 2001, 8:46pm
FaT I to beat BPBC I by 12.5s
FaT overall to lose to BPBC by 25 seconds. I am sure the 2nd VIII will do reasonably well, but I also think the 1st VIII has improved beyond recognition, and finally that the fitness of BPBC II is pretty good on the whole and expect them to lose to BPBC I by less than 20 seconds.
by Realist - Wed 28th Nov 2001, 8:54pm
If we did a tenth of the outings that BHBC do then we'd waste them. As it is we'll be pretty damn close.
by Pessimists are rarely disappointed - Wed 28th Nov 2001, 9:26pm
When we finally get ourselves a boat and some practice (God forbid) we'll totally despatch you guys, but for the time being I think that crew cohesion will outweigh our substantially better erg scores.
FaT I by 14 sec FaT combined by 8 sec Outing adjusted: BPBC by 3 min
by gf - Wed 28th Nov 2001, 9:52pm
Hopefully all four crews will tie in a course record time*.
However, looking at past years' results, the times are eye-openingly spread out. Wins for 1st & 3rd I by 23 sec and BPBC overall by 8 sec (the latter being largely dependent on BPBC II somehow getting round Grassy). Good luck to all of our crews, including Thursday's novices. *Of course, in this scenario, Jesus would fix it and award themselves the prizes.

I feel that it's only fair that I disclose that:
a) I'll be doing this race on painkillers; b) I got a stitch this morning just from walking fast to catch the train. You may want to make adjustments to your predictions as a result.

Wins for 1st & 3rd I by 23 sec and BPBC overall by 8 sec (the latter being largely dependent on BPBC II somehow getting round Grassy). Mr Fisher - a win by 23 secs for 1&3. What are you thinking man?
Having coached Trin at the weekend I think they may have peaked too early (I spotted Martin smiling in the boat at one stage), whilst BPBC are coming to the boil at just the right time :-) BPBC I to win by 3 secs, BPBC I and II by 18 secs. This obviously assumes that 1&3 beat Boar's Head, Gonville and the other scum, else we'll just have to row faster and win by more. Good luck to all at 1st and 3rd

The more amusing question is what the differences in time will be between the BPBC VIII and the Fairburn IV.....

In my single scull said: The more amusing question is what the differences in time will be between the BPBC VIII and the Fairbairn IV..... Well as it's a different course, with no intermediate timing, we'll never know.
by I have accepted an invitation to shoot - Thu 29th Nov 2001, 8:28pm
Well then, it appears that the IV will simply have to row the extended course, to show just how soft BPBC really are.
by RTT - Fri 30th Nov 2001, 12:17pm
Well, seeing as you're all still out there and I've just finished my project proposal, I'll make a prediction about how it's going. Clearly this can't win as I've seen people this morning and have the advantage of knowing how large the bags under their eyes are (plus how much the BPBC guys have drunk).
But here goes: 1st & 3rd beat BPBC by 11s BPBC win overall by 3s
