How should we select crews?
Do ergs Float? Should we seat race? Is strength relevant? Or given the popularity of a previous poll, should democracy be allowed to flourish? You choose:
Seat Racing  22%
Pairs Matrix  22%
Sculling trial  5%
Bodyweight-adjusted 2k erg test  7%
absolute 2k erg test  2%
10m erg test  0%
Max Bench Press  2%
Democratic Web Poll  7%
Previous term's lard consumption  7%
Formal Hall pulling prowess  15%
By default because there are more available seats than rowers  7%
Fiat racing.  2%
Total: 41 members' votes

Good to see 2k's as popular as ever!

The Poll said: To vote, select one of the following options
Why can we only select one option? Surely a real selection policy would take into account all of the above options and more. You don't want to make it look like the club's gone soft these days ;)

How many people who've voted for it have actually been in a pairs matrix?

What is the pairs matrix?

Similarly, how many people who voted for Fiat racing have actually raced a Fiat ??

Coach: "Make sure you cover the spoon"

Rower: "There is no spoon"

I suspect that my vote went through as pairs matrix (instead of the intended seat racing) as IE screwed up my voting form.

Having said that, I have partaken in a pairs matrix.
by Dan - Mon 23rd Feb 2004, 12:35pm
how could you not want to do it as a pairs matrix? You get to row in pairs all day which makes it far more enjoyable than any other type of selection policy that you could use. Although i guess given that it is a poll to decide the best way to select crews this probably isnt the best reason to vote for it!

Unfortunately if you use it for selection you surely will end up in a pair with someone you would much rather not row a pair with. The only way to avoid this problem and still have the enjoyability of being on the water is a sculling trial. How could you not want to do it as a sculling trial?

Personal example: dangerous dave.

Ummmm.....preposition?

And of course there is the obvious point that in a matrix you swap partners, so yes, everyone has to row with "Dave", but everyone gets to row with "Jamie" too.

I suspect that if we had actually had a pairs matrix that year and if contrary to expectation crap people like me and Dave were to participate, I would have had the pleasure of rowing with Dave and not Jamie, while you would have rowed with Jamie but, lucky for you, not Dave.
by Dubya - Mon 23rd Feb 2004, 3:51pm
btw I hope Dave doesnt read this page.

My vote would be for something that doesn't happen on the reach with at least two or three races having to avoid oncoming traffic....

Surely size of (car) stereo might be a factor to take into account in who goes in pairs with whom.....
by Dan - Mon 23rd Feb 2004, 11:09pm
well obviously you would just need to hold the races off cam to obtain satisfactory results. however i see dubyas point about the pairs, although theyre fun if they work they can be a pain if they dont. also potentially wet. maybe sculling would be a better option.
by dw229 - Mon 23rd Feb 2004, 11:11pm
I can't scull.

Oh, maybe that's the point. :(

What about swapping blades while in a single?

Well done - you've made the crew...
by TomC - Tue 24th Feb 2004, 10:10am
Formal hall pulling prowess: although this is horrific and a potential health hazard, it would be good measure of just how badly people want to make the crew. Similarly lard consumption, but there's a danger that people might be able to "buy" their seats.

I was only trying to create a Picky-esque moment... you're supposed to challenge, not believe!

Alright - maybe I was selecting the crew based on being able to claim that you can swap the blades in a single. Or something. [/backpedal]

No it hasn't.
by rb - Wed 25th Feb 2004, 11:07pm
The poll "Which FaT/BPBC boat will complete the Fairbairns course in the shortest time?" attracted the most votes - with 47. This poll is currently in joint 2nd place with 37 votes though

Hurrah for the pairs matrix! Making a huge push for the finish, reminiscent of myself and Gaypers in the semi-final of S1 at Gloucester.

Seems seat-racing is pushing back!
