No money = no kit!

Michaelmas term began very positively with JPMorgan approaching us with an offer of sponsorship. An offer gladly taken. The senior squads started training in fours in preparation for the University Fours regatta- with excellent results: victories in the women's 4+ and the Light IV (men's 4-) categories. As the focus shifted towards the Fairbairn Cup, the squads moved into VIIIs, participating in the Autumn Head (men only- coming first in the VIII and the 2nd IV) and the Winter Head (men came 2nd in the VIII, women did badly coming 10th!). All our ardour and our coaches' involvement paid off: The 1st VIIIs both came 3rd in the Fairbairns and the women's 1st IV beat a very strong field to the Fairbairn IV's Cup. BPBC, as expected, made a strong Fairbairns appearance, with BPBC M1 defending the Inivitational title... yet again! Well done to all involed... a great warm up for Lents...! Our LBCs did an excellent job recruiting the finest of this year's freshers intake into our novice squads. All crews showed great promise in the Fairbairns, with the women's 1st VIII coming 7th after not qualifying for the Queen's Ergs final and the 1st and 2nd men beating BPBC II/ Fat W1 and Fat W2 in Senior Fairbairns respectively. Well done to all the novices for getting involved with the sport. We hope you had a good term and return to row at senior level next term! A great thank you to our coaches for self-sacrificing (and hopefully continuing) efforts, especially Iain, Henry and Russ! And JPMorgan for sponsorship and encouragement. Dan Darley and Rich Dewire have broken the Concept II world record for 1,000,000m on an indoor rowing machine! They finished at 10:32 a.m. this morning with a total time of 3 days 17 minutes - an incredible achievement and breaking the previous record by 4 hours 31 seconds. They have rowed alternately since 10:15 Sunday morning, swapping every 1 to 2 hours and catching whatever sleep and rest they could between turns. The record attempt has also helped to raise the profile of their entry in the Atlantic Rowing Race, beginning later this month, the 2003 winners of which were the previous 1,000,000m record holders. The Captains and Committee of First and Third Trinity BC are proud to announce that, as of today, the Club will be sponsored by JPMorgan. The Committee are looking forward to working closely and successfully with our new sponsors. We are currently organising an event to celebrate our partnership, at which Club members will have the opportunity to meet with JPMorgan representatives. 5pm-10pm ATBH. Burgers, bacon rolls, veggie burgers (first one free, £1 thereafter). A selection of delectable cocktails, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Tickets free for freshers, £5 for seniors on the door, £4 in advance (available until Friday lunchtime, email kss@firstandthird.org); this gets you cocktails and a free burger/bacon roll. 18th Sep '05	Iain wins FISA Masters	by ELT
First and Third's boatman Iain Law won two events at the FISA World Masters Regatta in Strathclyde Park this weekend - the men's (B) 1x and (B) 2x categories, rowing for Laich o' Menteith BC. With an eight-lane course available, the regatta can accommodate a very large number of entries from around the world; there were 60 entries in the MB2x and 80 in the MB1x category. An impressive achievement!

In the Silver Goblets and Nickalls' Challenge Cup, Tom Rose and his partner Tom Dyson, rowing for Cambridge University Lightweight RC were unlucky to be drawn against the Danish pair, B.B. Helleberg & T. Ebert. This pair had recently won the Lightweight men's pairs at the Eton World Cup, and Ebert is a reigning Olympic champion and was ranked by FISA as one of the world's top ten rowers in 2004. The race merited a mention in the Daily Telegraph. The two Toms are now focusing on the lightweight category at the National Championships and we all wish them every success there. Jon Davies stroked a Rob Roy BC four in the Wyfold Challenge Cup, but was beaten in the first round. Steph Richards, who won the Ladies' Plate with Leander Club in 2004, was again coxing their Ladies' Plate entry. After beating crews from Sweden and Ireland, the crew raced Cambridge University BC in the final. They were unable to match a crew consisting primarily of this year's Goldie colours, which won by one and three quarter lengths. Cambridge University Women's BC, featuring Alla failed to qualifer for the Remenham Cup. First and Third withdrew its entry from the Temple Challenge Cup, an event for which no Cambridge College crews qualified. The only Cambridge College represented in the regatta was Clare BC who lost in the first round of the Men's Student Coxed Fours. [Very many thanks to Simon for this summary.] (1 reply...)

Finally... this year's superb second VIII song is here. I have also finished uploading my photo collection from the last day of the Mays. These include entertaining pictures of Downing beached after being bumped by the grads. Also in general I tried to include a sense of just how many people there were on the banks watching. The atmosphere was amazing.

The Cambridge Channel Challenge sponsored by Deloitte, a charity race. This summer First and Third are competing in The Cambridge Channel Challenge: a rowing race between half-a-dozen boats from colleges of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge aiming to support the charities Cancer Research UK and the University Sports Complex. It will take place after the 19th June dependant upon favourable weather conditions. The inaugural Cambridge Channel Challenge was launched in December 2004 and is organised by members of the Lady Margeret Boat Club of St. John's College, Cambridge. The race will start at Shakespeare Beach in Dover and will finish when the first rower steps onto French sand, after more than 5 hours of intense rowing. The English Channel separates England from Europe by 21 miles and is well known for being one of the world's most challenging stretches of water for ocean rowers. The row will be tough: side by side racing for over five hours in variable conditions- it will make any Cam based race look like a gentle Sunday afternoon paddle! This will also be a two fold Guinness world record attempt, for the fastest time and for the greatest number of crews competing. In order to make this event as successful as possible, we need your help. The aim is to make as much money as possible for the chosen charities and in order to acheive this, we need you! The dinner will take place on Saturday 18th June, the last day of the May Bumps. It will be held in the cloisters of Nevile's Court, Trinity College at 7.30pm (Pimm's reception) for 8pm. The dress-code is formal club dress or black tie for men and the equivalent for women. Afterwards, there will be a traditional "boatie bop" in the WPR with drinks provided. THE MENU: Pimm's No.1 Reception ~~~ Butternut Squash, Thyme, Mascarpone & Hazelnut Soup ~~~ Breast of Guinea Fowl wrapped in Parma Ham, Fried Polenta, Tomato & Garlic Sauce with Pesto or Warm Red Onion, Goat's Cheese & Pinenut Tart with Rocket & Sun-blushed Tomato Salad Served with seasonal vegetables ~~~ Trinity Crème Brûlée with Fresh Raspberries ~~~ Coffee and Mints Port: Dow's Master Blend Wine: Hardy's Voyage Colom Verdelho Chenin Blanc, Hardy's Voyage Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Ruby. The cost is £27 per person for dinner and £4 for a bop ticket if ordered in advance (or £5 on the door). The following were elected as officers of the 2005/6 Committee of First and Third Trinity Boat Club at the elections on Sunday 22 May 2005. Overall Captain: Pia Schaefer. Men's Captain: Rachel Munro. Women's Captain: Pia Schaefer. Secretary: Dan Jane. Junior Treasurer: Honey Duan. Kit and Social Secretary: Amelia Russell. Men's Lower Boats Captains: Tom Andrews, Albert Cheung, Seb Pancratz, James Scott (joint team). Women's Lower Boats Captains: Clair Birbeck, Katie Birley, Harriet Booker, Damilola Dauda (joint team). Coxing Captain: Magnus Jones. Webmaster: Catherine Aiken. Many congratulations to them all, and thanks to those who voted. The officers-elect will take office at the conclusion of the 2005 Henley Royal Regatta, viz. Sunday 3 July. Under their leadership may the club continue to enjoy great success!

The Rules of the RTT Regatta 1. That this be a side by side regatta in single sculls. 2. That the course be 500m from the second post upstream of Ditton Corner to the first winning post of the Colquhoun sculls. 3. That this race take place annually on my birthday (18th April), or the nearest public holiday. 4. That anyone who is my friend be qualified to compete. 5. That entries be free of charge. 6. That the appointment of umpires, presentation of prizes and the resolution of all disputes be at the sole discretion of RTT. 7a. That the draw be made by me on the afternoon of the regatta. 7b. That the first round draw be entirely biased towards amusing combinations of competitors. 7c. That the second and subsequent rounds be selected randomly. 7d. That the order of races be determined by me. 8. That two boats only start in one race, each boat to abide by its own accidents. 9. That in the event of a dead heat the course be re-rowed immediately in the opposite direction. 10a. That in the event of a competitor falling in, a pint of bitter be presented to the me at the Maypole that evening. 10b. That in the event of me falling in, a pint of bitter / lager presented to each competitor at the Maypole that evening. 10c. That in the event of a competitor causing me to fall in, the competitor present a pint of bitter / lager to each other competitor at the Maypole that evening. 11. That the winner be required to attempt to swap his blades over before collecting the prize. 12a. That any competitor wishing to do so may attempt to swap their blades over, with the best attempt or fastest successful attempt qualifying for a pint of bitter / lager from me at the Maypole that evening. 12b. That competitors in this sub-event be exempt from rule 10 for the duration of their attempt. 13a. That in the event of an American or Frenchman winning, this regatta cease to be held. 13b. That in the event of a coxswain winning, I go out in a 4+ ten times before being allowed out in a real boat again. 14. That Eton Boy wear a red sunhat whilst competing. 15. That any President of a University club who loses to a woman, be required to repeat the course wearing nothing but gold socks and other clothes (if any) at the sole discretion of his adversary. 16. We now have a selection of new boats to squeeze into the boathouse. A new Lola coxless IV replaces Mary Gwyneth who sadly met her end at the end of Peterborough rowing lake 2 years ago. A new 'elite' novice VIII has arrived to help ease the strain on Peter Brandt and Titan during novice term. In addition, we also now have a coastal IV, which will be of immense value in the coaching of novices; it is a wide stable boat but will give novices much of the usual benefit of outings in IVs. It will also be useful for seniors during technical outings. Both boats are made by Burgashell. The coastal IV will probably even get used to take FaT across the channel as part of the Cambridge Channel Challenge organised by LMBC! (3 replies...)

First and Third now have their very own webshop where you can help raise money for FaT when shopping online through Amazon, John Lewis, M&S, Oddbins and many other retailers. All you need to do is go to our webshop and then click through to the retailer's website and make your purchase. A commission of between 1 and 10% will then be paid straight to FaT and can go towards subsidising social events and dinners.

Congratulations to First and Third oarsman Alla Doubrovina who beat Oxford by 2 1/3 lengths at the Henley varsity races on Saturday. Alla, who noviced at Trinity in 2002, rowed at bow in the women's Blue boat. Alex Summers, president of the men's lightweights club, was the other FaT oarsman in the weekend's races against Oxford. Alex, rowing at 2, sadly suffered his third consecutive defeat with CULRC. A full report of the Henley races, where all the races against Oxford apart from the men's heavyweights take place, is available on the Rowing Service, here
