BumpIt by Simon - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 8:34am
It's cool, well done people. Just alarmed that it apeared between midnight Saturday night and 7am Sunday morning - it's bad enought that I have to work over the weekend (and thus engage work avoidance tactics like looking at the website) - hope you managed to get some sleep!
by Simon - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 8:35am
Why can't I put in results for division 4 on Tuesday on the predict a day at a time version?
by Martin - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 8:53am
We've chosen to restrict the number of divisions in the game to 3 mens and 2 womens. It just got too big and cumbersome to enter with everyone. 5th men and 2nd women - I'm sorry. Need to expand the information to include this, and details of the scoring. Anything else people want to know?

My plan for the Mays is to have it so that you can select which divisions (min of 2) you want to predict. Unfortunately I only had this idea yesterday morning, so there's simply not been time.... :-(

Any feedback in terms of usability or bugs will be extremely welcome - it's not been tested as much as I'd like - please post below or email webmaster@firstandthird.org.

(Also Simon, I'm afraid your guesses this morning have been wiped - I made a mess of the database and had to reinstate the automatic 3am backup.)
by Martin - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 9:15am
We've had a change of heart... expanded the one-day game to include all divisions. Hope this isn't too much to think about?!
by Martin - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 10:27am
Anyone know anything for definite about the start order at the bottom of W3? There seem to be rumours on the message board that CCAT III actually qualified in place of LMBC. Sounds v. stressful for the Maggie girls.

Anyway, be warned that obviously I'll have to mess about with the predictions down there if the start order is different.

Had a bit of a mare with this... New start order is now on, if anyone notices anything cocked up on the one day predictions let me know - not sure I've updated everything.
by Big time fan but not a prizewinner - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 12:43pm
This is awesome! Everyone loves a new feature. My predictions are crap though...
by Armchair bumper - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 1:50pm
This is AWESOME.. Thankyou martin, a brilliant new way to procrastinate, and SO much more understandable [and instantly gratifying] than bumpsdaq :)
by Random Guesser - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 3:51pm
I like the name Bumpit. Kind of like armpit...
by Need to have it on paper... - Sun 26th Feb 2006, 4:07pm
Please can someone send me a start order - the only one I've seen is in the bumps charts on our results pages and you can't copy and paste from that...

I think we have Amelia to thank for the name. It is inspired. Not sure anyone will have recognised it, but the logo itself is a take-off of Bopit extreme.

This is a better picture.

There's a space in the middle of the word on the t-shirts to reduce ambiguity... not that you'll be getting one if you win, Magnus!!

Prize for bugspotting goes to Richard King. Check out Kings I on this. D'oh!

Argh! I'm never going to be able to read it with the space in the right place (or a straight face) any more...

Guesses? I think you'll find that I'd spent ages constructing a form guide and working them out.

Check out the new 'Aggregate' prediction charts - under 'Predictions'.

Looks like a scoring system will have to wait for tomorrow...! ;-)

Out of interest, is there a scoring system yet? I'm curious to know how it will work exactly! Especially if you're going to be able to get negative scores...
by Partisan - Mon 27th Feb 2006, 10:37pm
No. There isn't. But there will be.

Catherine says that it exactly adds up the area on the graph between your predictions and the results. (As with all these things the sandwich boats get a bit annoying...) The values thus obtained will be transformed linearly such that a prediction with no bumps at all scores 0, and the perfect prediction would, for the men's competition, score 91. (For the women's competition 94, and for the daily competition it depends on how many divisions race that day...) A bonus score will then be added for each headship crew (for each of the 3 mens or 2 womens divisions) you get right bringing the maximum score to 100. The bonus score will be 3 per headship boat in all competitions.

For boats crossing into or out of the scoring zone (i.e. into or out of M4 or W3), only the section of the area between the actual and predicted results that lies in the scoring divisions will be counted.

Clear? As mud?

Is it possible to produce a full chart based on these? It would be interesting to see what the combined weight of everyone's entries looks like, and whether it comes close to winning the Bumpit prize.

What about crews that row over all 4 days, so are simultaneously worth maximum and zero points? Does any incorrect guess score minus infinity?!
by My mistake - Tue 28th Feb 2006, 12:20pm

Oops, I get it better now... The areas are all added together first... It would still go wrong if every crew rowed over, but that seems unlikely.
by jpd - Tue 28th Feb 2006, 1:04pm
The top line on the aggregate chart looks wrong for FaT M3. I know it's silly, but I still think it's wrong.
by Partisan - Tue 28th Feb 2006, 2:11pm
Ok, folks. Your last chance to enter the full-on 4-day contests. I'm diving off to the river now and as soon as the first results are here, that's it!

JPD, I'm going to need you to find the errors in my scoring algorithm! As you will see, haven't quite finished it, but it's a good enough stop-gap for today. I believe the area figures are right. Fingers crossed it works at all!
by Martin - Tue 28th Feb 2006, 5:46pm
Well, not quite the smooth first day I'd hoped for....

The Bumpit leaderboard is supposed to update with results as new results come in. Also I'm not sure why there are no men's results! Also, we need to find out the result of the rerow between Fitz II and Peterhouse II before tomorrow's competition can kick off!

Hopefully tomorrow will be better!

Racing was great though. Good rows from M3 and M2 which I saw.
by ScoreIt - Tue 28th Feb 2006, 6:15pm
Wednesday's competition is now open

And we're working to get the leaderboard running smoothly...

ScoreIt said: And we're working to get the leaderboard running smoothly...
Yep... there are a couple of really annoying little problems which are causing small errors in a few cases. I need to get these sorted before setting up the full scoring.

Have to say, some pretty fine preliminary scores have been posted! Will be v. interesting to see how the week pans out!!!! :-)
by Martin - Wed 1st Mar 2006, 11:16pm
I have fixed the aggregate charts. 84% of people think that Downing are going down tomorrow.
by BumpIT fan - Wed 1st Mar 2006, 11:17pm
I like the new goldness of the aggregate lines (I was playing with it when you changed it!) - much easier to see what's (supposedly) happening. :)
by Mighty seven girl - Wed 1st Mar 2006, 11:21pm
It took a good few minutes of thought before we hit on gold as the colour for the new lines.... Martin can't really see them though, cos he is colourblind. Hence the rest of the charts are in greyish.
by wee dabble - Wed 1st Mar 2006, 11:39pm
Does that mean that the message boards are hard to read? Because they are in gold. Gold is a good sort of a colour.

Not if you're in the website's safer-for-work mode... critical during any bumps week.

How is he coping with the new kit? (For those out of Cambridge, it's actually blue and gold rather than blue and orange/yellow.)
by Martin - Thu 2nd Mar 2006, 10:43am
Another fix to the aggregate charts - this one just affecting sandwich crews. It now properly shows Fitz with a 73% chance of bumping New Hall into division 1.

I think the site must look rather more mellow to me than most. My eyes have about 50% efficiency in detecting the red component. This must mean that gold looks rather darker and greener than it's supposed to.
by Martin - Thu 2nd Mar 2006, 12:13pm
Just uploaded new predictions charts - which show the actual results underlaid as thicker lines. I hope this will also pick up actual results through the day (incl on 1-day charts) - if someone could keep an eye on this and confirm I'd be grateful!

Check out Rich (Sidney Sussex)'s women's prediction so far! Seriously impressive.
by fudgeIT - Thu 2nd Mar 2006, 12:37pm
That's very cool, I like it! At some stage will the exact scoring system be published? I don't think it'll make any difference to my predictions strategy (which is so far yielding results worse than if I'd predicted nothing at all) but could be interesting.
by Bryn - Thu 2nd Mar 2006, 5:31pm
Possibly a big ask, but can we have a leaderboard to see which club is best at predicting results? (Just average scores over all the members from each club or something.)
by Martin - Thu 2nd Mar 2006, 6:25pm
BumpIT Friday is open for business. Will anyone score 100?
Probably easier tomorrow than Saturday, with the number of divisions racing each day increasing......
by Simon - Fri 3rd Mar 2006, 7:16am
My mistake said: It would still go wrong if every crew rowed over, but that seems unlikely.
Nearly happened in M1 yesterday!
I don't think it's going to be relevant this year, but can future Lents have some sort of bonus game for predicting cancellations?
by Martin - Fri 3rd Mar 2006, 10:25am
Simon said: Nearly happened in M1 yesterday!
Although that wouldn't be a problem in this case - because the rejigging of the scores is done on the total within each competition. I want to write this up properly today.
by Martin - Sun 5th Mar 2006, 12:17pm
Unfortunately we are missing results for M2 and one result for W2 from yesterday... BumpIT winners will be announced when CUCBC publish the final set of official results and these are updated!
by BJ - Mon 6th Mar 2006, 11:18pm
How do I go about claiming my prize? This is the greatest achievement of my life so far.
