Which was the better 2nd May VIII?
It must come down to these two, but who pips it. Find their result histories... Here (2002) Here (1999)

This is a very Peck-centric poll. Discuss.

Of course, until some late injuries the crew actually read: Walker, Goldmanis, Earl, Colvin, Jane, Clouting, Thorne, Davies, Adams It was with this crew that we posted our Grind time equal to the 1999 crew.

Surely the only relevant page to compare these crews is here. And I'm not biased or anything, but Cover Our Spoons is clearly a superior example of the 2nd VIII song...

I recall the time was surprisingly good - not only because it was my first time in a boat for 2 terms, but also because it was the last of a series of pieces at the end of an outing to Bottisham.Having said that, as Graham has said, the sublime 1999 boat never got a decent run at it... so in my humble opinion the score after considering Grinds stands at 1-1.

So if you're not allowed to consider songs in this poll, then surely you have to take into account the fact that only the 1999 crew (or one member of it anyway) came up with about 20 new answers for the seemingly simple joke "what kind of pie can fly?", ranging from the feasible (pie-lot) to the familiar but in the wrong joke (jelly-copter) to the ridiculous (bustard tart). Bonus points for 1999 I feel...

BTW, any rival claims from the 1986(?) or 1997 crews, as those were the only ones post-merger but pre-2002 to win blades?

And didnt Crawford have a good 2nd eight at some point?

The official 2nd VIII grind record is held equally by the 1999 and 2002 crews. This time is 1 sec faster than the previous record which was held jointly by the 1997 and 1998 crews. The 1999 crew believe they were on for a 3 second faster time [as from PaceCoach data] when they had to stop at Grassy. The 2002 crew reckon they also could have gone faster if they had ever done one fresh.

I don't even remember the time though - what was it? Perhaps the website should store grind times too... Don't recall the 1998 boat doing any decent times, though. Only 1 second slower?

I reckon if we swapped Peck for Colvin we would have gone at least 3 sec quicker :P Perhaps a comparison of who/where both crews bumped will help. For 2002: Jesus II - Railway Bridge (from 9th) LMBC II - middle of Reach (from 8th) Girton - 1/3 of the Reach (from 7th) Peterhouse - The Gut (from 6th)
