A rowing website popularity poll. Apparently by following the link you vote for ours - might be fun for a week or two. Their rules say maximum votes allowed are one per day each.

by not for me to decide - Sun 9th Feb 2003, 2:29pm
Personally I didn't think folks would like it - but I'm sure we could do if people wanted to.... Anyone feel we should / shouldn't?
by jpd - Sun 9th Feb 2003, 3:32pm
I don't think we should - it would just cheapen the site.
by dw - Sun 9th Feb 2003, 7:40pm
Yeah...firstandthird.org is pure class at the moment - why plebify it? :)
by Dubya - Sun 9th Feb 2003, 9:18pm
It doesn't have to be a big link, just a little one hidden away somewhere on the front page (on the text "100" in the bottom right corner or something) to save those of us in the know the trouble of clicking through to find the link...

That is my suggestion of something unobtrusive. Can easily go if it doesn't fit the bill!

What is the point is of artificially raising the website up somebody's ranking? Ok, so it was a good challenge for a week, but moving the link to the front page indicates it's more permanent than that. There's really not much here to interest anybody from outside the club is there?

hmmmmmmm. Why do we have a website? My view is that as well as being of service to members it should aim to raise the profile of Cambridge college rowing - and our boatclub in particular. For example, it could help to attract to Trinity people who are serious about wanting to try rowing or those who have rowed at school and are looking around at the various college clubs, or maybe even new people who would be interested in coaching. With the string of good results displayed on our front page at the moment it is a particularly good time to encourage people from elsewhere to visit! Whilst people are enjoying having ourselves at the top of the list it seems to make sense having it easy to get at...

Martin said: hmmmmmmm. Indeed. The THBC website (do they even have one nowadays?) was, back when their successful days were not such ancient history, little more than a recruiting tool. Can't hurt to advertise a little to candidates for whom rowing will be a factor in choice of college. For example, it could help to attract to Trinity people who are serious about wanting to try rowing or those who have rowed at school and are looking around at the various college clubs, or maybe even new people who would be interested in coaching.

One can't help but think that a rolling system of discarding votes would be rather more sensible than throwing out everything completely once a week! :-( Last I looked 'last week' we had 143 votes - very good work ;-)

gf said: Indeed. The THBC website (do they even have one nowadays?) was, back when their successful days were not such ancient history, little more than a recruiting tool. Given the current state of affairs, it can't really have worked very well, can it!? I suspect the best way of recruiting is to generate lots of oarsmen who are so keen they go get jobs coaching rowing at schools or join rowing clubs with big juniors programs, and convince them all that Trinity is the place to be......

So has this little campaign had any effect on the number of people visiting the site?

Simon said: So has this little campaign had any effect on the number of people visiting the site? I think it probably has increased the number of visitors. If you look at the number of page views coming from there, there are over 1200 additional hits in the last month, which is quite a few... and if you look at the last 2 weeks traffic, it is considerably more than at any point last term or earlier in this term. Of course that might be correlated to recent results... or not!
