1st men's novice VIII, 1st division

3rd overall
Time: 9:42
Well after an interesting marshalling period where we managed to remove 750g of weight from the boat (it was 1 and a half bottles wasnt it Sam?) we hit the start of the race into a headwind which seemed to hit us wherever we turned. this was worrying for me before we started but the guys held up so well i wasnt even noticing it at the end. we pulled a good time and 3rd was a slight downer after our truimph at Clare Novices; god knows how the team we beat in the quarters at said competition pulled a time 20 seconds faster than anyone else. but nonetheless, another solid row and another big step towards our goal of NM1 staying together next term, but just being reclassified as M2 (Jij)

2nd men's novice VIII, 2nd division

6th overall, FASTEST 2nd VIII!
Time: 10:11
Just to clear it up, although rowing as the second boat in the womens first division, we are a mens crew.
We were certainly faster than the boats ahead of and behind us and the rest of the second novice division.

joint 6th & top 2nd boat!!!
Yeah!!!! (T.A. O'Neill)
you beat LMBC 1, Downing 1 and Caius 1...

Bwahahaha! (Lorry)
Amazing result, we beat so many first boats. All that training has really paid off. Now we just have to show the seniors what we can do tomorrow. (Sam)
Committed to the race plan well - look forward, draw high for the first half; look forward, backsplash for the second. Simple things that seem to have gone out of fashion.

Rate was perhaps a touch low for the first third and we lacked for a cox box. Everything else close to perfection: good pushes, fantastic line from Emma (again), lots of concentration and commitment down the reach. Good.

Tomorrow we need more of the same, with the emphasis on more. Concentration when tired will be key. Look up, sit up, shame the oppo when the going gets tough. (Dan)

1st women's novice VIII, 1st division

10th overall
Time: 11:57
Good job girls! I am so proud of you all! We did it and we did it well. Even though our ranking is not that great, all the times of the crews before us are really close. Let's do it double tomorrow. Good rowing again. (Julijana)
I know it's a cheap shot, but it has to be said:

We are better than Bryn (and Phil)...FACT!!!

Well done girls, we died and we tried :) Yes the start wasn't perfect (lol, sorry!) but I think we picked it up towards the end and rowed pretty good. Now just got to do that and a bit more tomorrow...I'll bring the doughnuts!

p.s. also sorry about some truly horiffic coxing, think I'll leave that to Sarah for tomorrow! And if anyone has a spare knee going, please let me know, might be useful (Charley)
Very impressed girls. Good focus, good timing and obviously putting power down in the water. Congratuations. Now...to show the seniors what you can do today - and come back next term to bump! (Lyns)
Unfortunately, the yellow flag this term has had much better correlation with our scheduled outings than with bad weather conditions, so our preparations for this race were only slightly better than England's for the Ashes. The start sequence therefore bore uncanny resemblance to Steve Harmison's first ball, and took a few years off my life. After we got that sorted out, it was a generally tidy and committed row. We seem to have posted a fairly competitive time, so it's just a matter of seeing how everyone else fared! Didn't quite manage the bump on Girton by the finish line.

You might be interested to know that you covered the course 25s quicker than Phil and I did as novices (and I know exactly what your response to that will be)...

Congratulations all on losing your novice status, and good luck in your first race as seniors tomorrow! (BJ)

Well, the lack of outings had by these guys meant that I was slightly skeptical about how they might do. But when push came to shove they all tried there hardest, gave some of the best rowing I've seen from these guys all term. A mini disaster around chesterton aside, a really good race and I hope to see you all rowing bumps next year! Now go out and get really really drunk! (Lorry)

really well done everyone: truly inspirational coxing as well as singing from avin, and such a good result considering the circumstances! really enjoyed rowing with u guys. (NadZ)
Great race guys. You really pulled it together today. Fantastic line round Chesterton and some real grunt at the finish! A focused row too - whenever it slipped out of time you brought it back together. A good culmination of all the work you've put in this term! (Andy S.)
well you beat disney sussex A, their cox is getting it when i see her for sure.
EDIT (after seeing BJ's comment): ok i really can't remember why i wrote that but 'it' = 'laughed at' in this case (Jij)

2nd women's novice VIII, 2nd division

33rd overall, 10th fastest 2nd VIII
Time: 13:08
A very impressive row, given the lack of previous outings in this crew (total: 1 (a race)). You guys settled into a good rhythm early on, and maintained it throughout the race even when you were getting tired. Some fantastic coxing from Abi seemed to help keep the motivation up, and the push out of the railway bridge was superb - definition of the word "surge"! (Jane)
I was surprised about how well you guys were working together. Since very little work has been done in complete crews, and especially this week VIII's outings have been lacking somewhat, I didn't know how well you would cope under race presure. However, I need not have worried! Congratuations girls, a very strong result. I hope you are proud. Let's see you all next term for bumps! (Lyns)
We officially rule :) the whole race from start to finish is probably the most together we've ever been! The timing was really good, the coxing fantastic and as Jane said we flew off the Railway Bridge into the finish. I've had a look at previous FaT 2nd novice women times and I think our time is the fastest in 5 years - something to really be proud of. It's been such a laugh rowing in this team, you're all superstars and I send much penguin love to all. Full Pressure Flippers! (Kristina)

51st overall, 6th fastest 3rd VIII
Time: 14:29
Well done girls. Considering you didn't know your crew order before the race (...) I was most impressed with how this row went. A few slips in rhythm were quickly corrected and a good time was achieved! I hope you have all enjoyed this term, and hope to see you all back next term! (Lyns)
The two colleges melded well considering the lack of preparation. After a slightly shaky start you guys settled down to a good steady rhythm. There were occasional slips but fast recoveries! Overall you guys should be really proud of going the distance! (Jane)
