Mich Term 2006

2nd women's novice VIII

Queens' Novice Ergo Competition (2nd division)

18th in Division 2, 19th fastest 2nd VIII
Time: 17:40.72
Yey to the 2nd women!!! They all did really well, many not having a chance to even have a single practice 500m but they did so brilliantly. Each girl really put their heart into it and all had such fantastic enthusiasm! If they keep that attitude up I really see a bright novice term ahead of us! (Amy)
Wicked girls, absolutely wicked. Watched from the balcony and you all looked completely knackered after your sets!!!! Fantastic effort. Make sure you translate all that into the water and we'll be sure to beat all the other novices there!!! Excellent work from everyone and I hope you had a good night - I know I did!

Go FAT! (Lyns)
Well done! I hope you've all enjoyed your first taste of competition, now get ready for Clare Novice Regatta (prizes for top first boats *and* for top second boats this time). (Erica)

Emma Sprints, The Flying Penguins

1st round
lost to Jesus unfairly
After some atrocious work by the marshalls, they unfortunately started the race having just been blown into the bank, and by the time they were pushed out again, Jesus had taken a lead of several lengths. However the girls rowed really well, gaining on Jesus throughout the course, but 500m just wasn't enough time to make up the distance. An unfortunate loss, and no reflection on the quality of the rowing! (Jane)
Yes, we were not impressed at the marshalling... Georgia was about ready to stamp down there and give them a right bollocking! Which they deserved... how on earth are we supposed to row without clearance of the bank.
We were happy though, because the boat felt good and we felt like we had really been moving...closing that very big gap that had been created... maybe it was the amber socks and the penguin beaks that made the difference... (Baker)
2nd round
won easily
They were out to show those marshalls what they were really made of, and certainly did so! Again the wind played havoc, although I'm not sure that a cross-wind coming from the meadow side can account for why Newnham (on the towpath side) twice steered into us near the start. The marshalls then restarted the race, choosing to convert our 1/2 length lead into a 2 seat lead for Newnham, but we responded in the best possible way by rowing right through them and finishing more than a length clear. An awesome row girls, you definitely made your point! (Jane)
I think we were out to prove something... we felt cheated by the last race and so were well revved up. Despite the next Newnham/marshalling endeavour to deprive us of victory, we pushed really hard and left Newnham for dust. Well done girls, well coxed Abbi and thanks to Jane, Danielle, Lyns, Erica, Fran, Amy, Bryn and all the others who have helped us get to this race... penguin power!!! (Narelle)

Novice Fairbairn Cup (2nd division)

33rd overall, 10th fastest 2nd VIII
Time: 13:08
A very impressive row, given the lack of previous outings in this crew (total: 1 (a race)). You guys settled into a good rhythm early on, and maintained it throughout the race even when you were getting tired. Some fantastic coxing from Abi seemed to help keep the motivation up, and the push out of the railway bridge was superb - definition of the word "surge"! (Jane)
We officially rule :) the whole race from start to finish is probably the most together we've ever been! The timing was really good, the coxing fantastic and as Jane said we flew off the Railway Bridge into the finish. I've had a look at previous FaT 2nd novice women times and I think our time is the fastest in 5 years - something to really be proud of. It's been such a laugh rowing in this team, you're all superstars and I send much penguin love to all. Full Pressure Flippers! (Kristina)
I was surprised about how well you guys were working together. Since very little work has been done in complete crews, and especially this week VIII's outings have been lacking somewhat, I didn't know how well you would cope under race presure. However, I need not have worried! Congratuations girls, a very strong result. I hope you are proud. Let's see you all next term for bumps! (Lyns)
