Another day, another crew.

Pretty good race overall, but our strong restart at Ditton was possibly indicative of our underachievement up until then... We didn't quite catch Newnham II, which was annoying. (BJ)
The planned 'aggressive' wind off the start took us to a stratospheric rating of 32, and after a few strokes, stroke and cox took an executive decision not to bother with the stride. The row was pretty solid until we emerged from Grassy, at which point we all decided that we were going to rest up until the planned 'restart' after Ditton.

This plan worked exceedingly well, as a 30-stroke breather meant that the restart was both powerful and smooth. Luckily after the restart we maintained the aggression all the way to the finish, but being a gentlemen's VIII, we were far too polite to close up behind a women's crew, and decided to hold station half a length behind Newnham instead. 4th men's VIII, Lower VIIIs

19th overall, 3rd fastest 3rd VIII
Time: 8:48
A decent row! Got off to a good start then settled into a nice race rate of about 32. Good coxing round the corners and some hard pushes kept the boat speed high and the coaching is really showing - connection felt much better on the catch. We also beat three of the five crews ahead of us in the bumps (with one no show on Christ's part and a slender 2 second gap behind top third boat LMBC III). It's all starting to come together nicely and maybe if we race with a boat which isn't full of water in the "waterproof hull" we can cut those last 2 seconds off LMBC III (and the 4 behind the gents boat...). (A.J. Sugden)
Row was solid with some good pushes out of corners really keeping the boat moving. We beat plenty of boats around us in bumps and I can't help feeling with a little more work we could really make the boat (hopefully not still Richard Church) fly in Pembroke and bumps, maybe even put the gents in their place. (Will)
Pretty decent row all round. Nice to see Albert's resorting to stealing our blades and our boat in order to keep his boat faster though ;) (Sam)
Oops, we didn't think about the blade issue... Sorry! Not convinced it was your boat though. (BJ)
TR2 isn't your boat, it belongs to the 2nds!! We nicked it from them fair and square :-)

But yeah, a very impressive result from the 3rds; both of our '3rd' VIII's are now amongst the top four 3rd VIII's on the river. Here's hoping for more solid progress between now and Bumps. (Albert)
We decided on around rate 28-30 before the race, we wound it up to 33ish... and there it stayed! Rich kindly letting us carry like that.

Better coxing and better technique saw us make a huge improvement after Short Course, with a couple more weeks of coaching and a better boat... We should cause some mayhem come bumps :D (Lorry)
Much better row than last week, we've improved (through endless early morning outings), but can still get better earn our place at the bumps and hopefully get blades.

Interesting row though, not quite to race plan, good wind to 32, settling into a solid 33??? but we managed to sustain it all the way, but d'oh no bank party so no good photos (thats what bank parties are for really), apart from those beautiful images of paul making strange faces.

Well done guys. (M. Yarr)

1st women's VIII, 1st division, 1st run

1st of 21 women's crews
Time: 9:00
1st row: a bit rushed, plenty of aggression but it didn't quite go as far as it might have done because the rhythm was a bit lacking.

2nd row: much better technically, but we lost the killer edge and didn't take advantage of the better rhythm as much as we could have.

So, the worst of both worlds in some sense. But disregarding the "race" aspect of the day, I think there are a lot of positives, in particular that we do have both the rhythm and the power and just need to have them more consistently on at the same time!

Erica (Pedro)
Update: we won, and we came second as well(!) A pleasant if unexpected surprise! (Erica)
This was a committed piece with plenty of aggression and power going down, but it lacked some finesse and felt a bit rushed. (Amelia)
A very solid 'double run'. Combining the determination of the first run with the control of the second should get us to the racing form we want for Pembroke Regatta, the Bumps and the WeHorr. (Pia)

1st women's VIII, 1st division, 2nd run

2nd of 21 women's crews
Time: 9:09
Following Iain's advice, we lowered the rate a little on this piece and concentrated more on the rhythm. I thought it felt a little quichey which was disappointing given the aggression of the first race, but unsurprising given that we were knackered! It was still enough to seal our second first place of the day however, which was pleasing. (Amelia)

3rd women's VIII, Lower VIIIs

20th overall, 2nd fastest 3rd VIII
Time: 11:11
AWESOME ROW GIRLS!!! That really was an amazing row, especially considering we had a different cox and 2 subs rowing, we were rowing in Margot - which most people hadn't rowed in before - and were abandoned with no bank party or coach. As a crew, your lack of outings didn't let you down, you really got it together so well during the row down and the race. Seriously girls, an excellent row, it felt so good in regard to power, rhythm and balance. I just hope we got a time to reflect that!!!

Lyns xxx

P.S - Also, that row up and the race was the most fun I've had rowing for ages!!!!! We need chocolate and drunken Sorcha stories more often... (Lyns)
Wow, I think we really pulled it together there. Apart from a slight bowside lean we had the boat well balanced and I thought we went really well.

Fingers crossed for the results! (Rachel)
