Mich Term 2004

1st women's IV

University IVs (1st division)

Heats
Lost to Tit Hall (3 lengths)
Due to the unlucky scenario as laid out so aptly by Danielle (aka the living proof that The Natural Strokesider does exist) we didn't approach the race as determined and relaxed as we should have to ensure a triumph over Tit Hall.

We mean to get even in the HorIVs. There, I said it. The pressure is on. (Pia)
Umm. difficult to say, all very painful and messy. we lost by.. dunno, few lengths maybe?
some pre-race difficulties probably didn't help: we arrived atbh to find that lilie was being erica for the day and so we were 3 stroke siders and one bow sider.. i thought it couldn't be that hard (!) but turns out on the row down i can't actually do anything coordinated with my left hand (so feathering was out) and for that matter couldn't get my blade in or out of the water..
and to be perfectly honest i'm far too fat to be sat in the bows.
so upon late arrival at the plough we had a bit of a hasty reshuffle: from pia (4), cath(3), lilie(2) and me... to lilie(4), cath(3), me(2) and pia.
interesting. so we took it off rating about 1 million, strode to a reasonabe amount but lost a bit on tit hall... caught them up again half way up the reach but then were all a bit knackered and they got away again.
could have been a lot worse i guess. better luck to the 2nd women!

Head of the River IVs (Senior3 IV+)

439th overall, 44th of 111 WIV+, 17th of 44 in WS3A, 2nd of 14 college WIV+
Time: 23:39.24
Fantastic row! Despite missing the train to London, we got there on time and a really great start set us nicely into race rhythm to overtake Exeter (Oxford) and Emma very quickly; then holding off Imperial and an unidentified crew who were 'going for pennants' for a good time before they overtook. Unfortunately not too much chance for Jenners to practice swearing at crews for us to overtake because we were started a long way behind a group, but we made up good water on them by the end. Some confusion over distances led to us taking the rating up with about 800m to go, but probably this was a good thing...

Finished second college boat; a minute ahead of BP, only a minute behind CUW, very pleased and very tired! (Erica)

Fairbairn Cup - IVs (College IVs)

2nd College IV, 3rd overall
Time: 13:12
They were going to get beaten... they really, really had it coming... but we had done an VIIIs race before.

Unfortunately, we failed to hit our target of beating Magdalene's 1st IV which had relegated us so insultingly comfortably to 2nd place in both the HoRR and the Winter Head. In the end, we weren't man enough, I reckon. We didn't quite believe we could have them and to be quite honest, that lactate set in painfully soon after the start.

Definitely not one of our nicest rows, but still one to be pleased with, and with the narrowest margins between us and those ex-CUW amazones all term, if that is of any consellation...

What is good to see is how much faster we were than the rest of the College IVs. :)

As I said at the dinner... aubergine-violet is this term's red!

xx
