Charybdis

Charybdis
'The first IV approac...'

Maker: Janousek
Made in: 1992
Bought in: July 1992
Named by: Michael Atiyah, October 1992

Charybdis was bought and named as one of a matched pair of IVs in July 1992. The name is taken from Greek mythology, in which Charybdis and Scylla were a pair of monsters, one on each side of the Strait of Messina. Charybdis was a cave dwelling sea-monster which thrice a day drew up water and spouted it to form a deathly whirlpool.

For three years until the club bought Sirens, Charybdis was used most by the women whilst the sister boat, Scylla, was used heavily by the men. After the purchase of Sirens, both boats were used by the men's squad and Charbydis, having been used less intensively until then, was used as the 1st boat.

Charybdis won 3 or 4 consecutive University IVs titles for the women from 1992 to 1995 and carried the men to their University IVs win in 1997.

It was unfortunately damaged in a road accident whilst on loan to the University Lightweights Squad in 2001, when it was replaced by the Prince of Wales.
