25th Feb '03Bumps mobile reportingby mcp
The Lent Bumps begin this week - no doubt with the usual overload of thrills and spills...

Message posts from members' mobiles will appear below - so it is one of the places to keep an eye on for up-to-the-minute information from the river.

Formatting
There isn't any formatting option because there is on preview - so you wouldn't catch errors. Seems to be working then

Men's division 4
4th boat crashed off the start, but pulled away well. A host of fines below! EM, St Eds and Mag may rerow.
by Martin - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 3:08pm
Women's division 3
Bright but breezy conditions saw Catz blown onto bank at start. Good racing elsewhere, class overbump at bottom.
by Martin - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 3:57pm
Men's division 3
Complete chaos mid division. Cla and Gir caught in it - tech RO. 4th boat mowed down hh. Hom and Ftz rerow.

Also well done to 3rd VIII for bumping Sidney II. Results coming in pretty much simultaneously on CUR1350 and 1+3 website :-)
by Mike - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 4:02pm
Mike said the wrong thing...
Sorry - that's obviously Selwyn II, not Sidney II. D'oh!
by Simon - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 5:13pm
Hmmm, still no sign of M2 - can we have text messages with updates when there are delays (as this is what I guess has happened here)?
by Martin - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 5:14pm
Men's division 2
An awesome row from 2nd boat say them hold off fast PET till railings. CCAT rower ended up in the river.

Hear, hear (or rather - I can't hear, as the CUR online feed is strugggling; neither can I see any results anywhere)...

From CUR1350: (But possibly take it with pinch of salt, as he didn't yet have places 15-18)

Emma II bpd Christ's II. Peterhouse bpd 1st+3rd II. LMBC II bpd Downing II. Queens' bpd Fitz.

Lower down it appears Emma II and Christ's II failed to clear, so CCAT probably have technical rowover.

So - barring the dream scenario of bumping back, it's a day's rest, then holding off King's, with an always-satisfying bump on Downing II to follow on Friday?

Martin would be perfect as the person who writes the fly sheets for the Evening Standard - giving just enough information to make you want to know more (i.e. to buy the newspaper), but not enough to tell you any details at all: e.g. "Bank rate decision" instead of "Interest Rates Cut". Or in this case "CCAT rower ended up in the river" when it's probably something like he slipped on the towpath...

It seems to take him about 35 minutes to sort it out on average... that's not bad. Extra text messages cost money -- 24p a shot!

When there is lots of carnage they take ages to decide what bumps will be awarded - which causes the delay. Things were running a bit behind because of the disputes too.
If they were significantly behind I would send an update.

Yes this is a problem. I will try to avoid a repeat performance. Any other suggestions welcome.

No, it's not a problem at all... it makes you keen to know more, which is how it should be.

So how did CCAT rower end up in the river?

That was the point - I had no idea ;-)
by keef - Tue 25th Feb 2003, 7:57pm
According to the cucbc message boards, on attempting to steer around emma II ccat had a problem with a tree. Which deposited their 2 man in the river.

Adding a second 1st boat scalp on Friday then collecting Disney II or the Hommers on Saturday? Nice work, too, by the 3rd VIII.

Quarter of a length off Maggie coming into Ditton when crab at four effectively ended the race. They had a go at getting back at Maggie but the distance was too great. Emma closed to within a length but never looked like getting any closer. Roll on tomorrow.

Of course, if you'd listened to CUR1350, you'd have heard all that long ago...

Cheers anyway.

Apologies for that. Our RealAudio server isn't quite coping with demand at the moment. We are looking into alternative solutions for the Mays though.

by Dan - Sat 1st Mar 2003, 5:13pm
FaT get to within quarter of a length in Plough reach but headship eludes them. Top 5 all row over. Time for alcohol. :(
by Martin - Sun 2nd Mar 2003, 4:54pm
An exhausting week, even for those who weren't rowing ;-) Well done to the 1st VIII who, although not quite fast enough, did us proud. And to the women for going up - that was great to watch too.

As something of a conclusion to the successful 'mobile update' thing, the technically minded may be interested to hear that in the 5 days we had 100000 pages requested from the site, 10000 views of the Lents results page and 1200 WAP pages. Number of people who used it is all is difficult to guess, but probably around 3300.
