We'd have gone faster at a higher rate, however I called the wind a stroke too late, and as such we only hit 29 before our practice finished and the race started, thus effectively rate capping ourselves. As such we proceeded in a fashion which would be better described as "stately" than "Turbo" until we hit Chesterton, at which point our race took a statistical turn for the worse.

I have a 100% record at winning Fairbairn's when I screw up Chesterton, however on Friday my skills deserted me and we cornered largely without incident, effectively condemning us to mediocrity. Like all coxes, I'm going to blame bow pair, for no reasonable reason.

We continued down the reach, still rowing pretty well, but by Grassy it was abundantly clear that Downing behind us had gained. A series of determined pushes held them off* and we finished quite strongly. A hard row, well executed, but ultimately hampered by failing to back it down far enough at the start. More practice strokes required for next year.

On a happier note, Downing tried to overtake on the way home. They failed.

*By "held them off", I clearly mean "We weren't actually overtaken..." (Swords)
