1st men's VIII, College VIIIs

1st of 7 college VIIIs, 3rd overall
Time: 9:25
We nailed the first half of this race -- according to Henry's unofficial timing, we had taken 7 seconds off Jesus by Plough Reach. I think if half of our 20-strike wind hadn't taken place before the start line, we'd have taken even more!

Then we had a (minor) crab as we came around Ditton, and in literal terms we recovered from it quickly and admirably, getting things sorted within a couple of strokes. The minor hiccup, however, seemed to affect us far, far more than it should have. We failed to execute our planned "second start," which transformed into a run-of-the-mill push that fizzled out after a few strokes. As a result, we didn't attack the Reach nearly as aggressively as we should have. This showed in our time: having taken ~7 seconds in the first third of the race, we made up no further ground through the final two-thirds. Still a good result, and I think we've got a lot of speed left on the table. (James)

Light IV, College IV-

2nd of 3 coxless IVs, 18th overall
Time: 10:15
We managed to stick fairly well to the race plan with a good 'second start'. Steering was an issue though, due to little rudder effect, resulting in a number of, towards the end high-pitched, calls from Dan that stroke side should pull harder :o) We could probably have taken 5-10s of the time if we had rowed in our own IV- (we borrowed one from Robs because Tobias managed to rip one of the footplate sliders off by pulling to hard :o) )

Overall a good first race with good pushes and lots of determination. It bodes well for the Uni IV. (Pedro)
We could make lots of excuses; tired legs from the eights race, we'd only previously done half an outing in this combination, the riggers were too high, the rudder didn't work, the wind picked up, Dan was ill, etc, etc.

But the reality is that, despite pulling hard and rowing pretty well, we lost heavily to some losers in red. In only one week, we shall return, stronger than they can possibly imagine.

The good news is that the fastest town 4- only managed 10:09, and allowing 20 seconds for a cox we were well clear of all the other college boats. (Tom C)

1st men's IV, Upper College IV+

2nd of 13 in upper college IV+, 30th overall
Time: 10:44
Lost by only a second, but happy with our mental approach. This was our second race of the day, and we didn't make the same mistake twice. This time we attacked the third quarter (i.e. the Reach) relentlessly, meaning we'd pretty much gassed ourselves by the rail bridge. The boat felt very, very, very heavy. We had a variety of theories, with the two most likely being 1) tiredness from the earlier race in the VIII and 2) and the presence of a rudder obstruction which fouled the steering and could have added some nontrivial drag. Not sure how much of a difference that made, but we still had a committed row and that's what counts at this early stage. (James)

2nd men's IV, Lower College IV+

3rd of 6 lower college IV+, 54th overall
Time: 11:14
Not the prettiest or most comfortable row, but we got stuck in and gave it everything. Rowing in the College Lowers division we lost to Christ's only entry (who were 2 seconds slower than our 1st coxed IV - suspicious no?) and a Maggie crew who gave their "1st" IV a good whipping, so we were fairly pleased with our placing. (Phil)

3rd men's IV, Lower College IV+

5th of 6 lower college IV+, 66th overall
Time: 11:41
A good solid row for what was a scratch crew in our first race of the term. Kept it strong for the most part, though we paid the price and faded a bit in the last 500m. Bodes well for the rest of the term :) (Sam)
