Some last-minute crew changes caused the start to be slightly scrappy. However, once everyone remembered how to row, things got a little better and the crew found something reasonably rhythmical. A recurring crab problem, which had dogged them from just after the start, was resolved before chesterton. Down the reach, they started to tire and shorten up a a bit.
