New website banner image, anyone?

Too much background. The present one works well because the silhouette lends itself a simple, almost monochromatic look. I'm sure someone will have something looking into the evening light which will work well - it should preferably have just river and boats, with not too much of interest on the bank.

Incidentally, I mentioned the banner image to Martin earlier in the week, and if you look through the photos he took you can see him experimenting....!

After some experimenting, I think Sam Zhang wins the prize for best contenders for a new banner graphic - with this picture, or the following one. If anyone thinks anything else would work well now's a good time to suggest it! (Or I invite you to try and mock something up... if there are any other suggestions we could decide the new design with a members vote!)

Something based on this? Or maybe the two crews could pose at the catch outside the boathouse in 1930s style.

Oooh yes, very keen for some wanky front-stops posing!

The current look has been very popular - I've tried to change it a couple of times before and have been voted down. Which is why so far I've been looking for something similar. Would be v nice to have both crews but none of the hundreds of pictures has quite the right shape, or the right amount of contrast to work when changed to monochromatic.
We could try a montage kind of thing, I'll have a play with it, but I think it'll be hard to beat one of Sam's pics which are shaping up really nicely.

I think a montage would be way too busy, as would a posed picture in front of the boathouse. Also, it definitely needs to be a picture of people rowing, and preferably racing; after all, that's by far and away the most important reason for the existence of the club. If collecting silverware were the main goal, we'd do our training at antique fairs.

The two pictures from Sam look like excellent choices. Unfortunately, if we want to have racing crews, the chances are that it can't easily feature both the men and women. Maybe we could have one of each, and it selects them at random each time you visit the site?!
