Clearly the M6 rules. Where else do you get a split carriageway so it feels like you're on a 3-lane 70mph one way street, passing spectacular countryside? I nearly went for the M5 though - typically less busy and it does have some nice sweeping bends and things. Also who voted for the M25?! I suppose it is free parking, but you still have to pay road tax to use it....

I agree that the M6 through Cumbria is one of the most scenic stretches in the entire UK, much of the M6 is overloaded with HGVs, usually overtaking each other with a speed differential of 0.1mph, or less. Making progress above 60mph is rare in places. If you have to take it as a whole, I can't bring myself to vote for the M6.

True, but it isn't all bad; Neil and Joe will verify that I once averaged over 90mph (I think it was 94?) from Preston to Penrith....

I'm afraid I can't verify this, as I was in the 'brace' position for most of the journey.

I can however claim 240 knots (276mph) on the stretch just south of Penrith. Does this count?

Were you actually on the road surface or merely moving parallel to it at the same altitude?

My coordinates were the same as those of the motorway. There may have been a small height discrepancy, but what's 250 feet between friends?
