BPBC 1st men's VIII, Invitation VIIIs
1st (apparently), no hang on; 2nd (maybe)

Amazing wormhole action!
Official time - 13:06
Our original guess at the time was something like 15:06. The official time published on the day was 13:06. They must have realised that this was somewhat erroneous, and sneakily changed the published result at a later date to 14:56 (which was correct according to their website on 25/9/03, but don't be surprised if it's changed...).

An unmitigated disaster, the only consolation being that despite having absolutely the worst row imaginable, we still finished fifth and within sight of Caius. Bring on the Lents.

D'oh. Reasonably good row, but the scum beat us to the title by 2 seconds.
We took down the following 1st eights: Wolfson, Darwin, King's, Clare, Sidney, Girton, CCAT, St Ed's, Pembroke, and Catz

2 seconds. Grrrr. Dodgy Jesuan timing.
Given the contrasting rowing careers of the 2nd VIIIs members (drawing from the 1st to 5th May VIIIs & including everything from past captains to a novice) the crew came together very nicely for the race. Some really solid training over three weeks in the VIII gave us some confidence with which to approach it.
Our race plan featured a gradual increase in pressure and worked well - a good rhythm & a relaxed but solid row as far as Chesterton set us up very nicely for a good Reach and bearable corners.
It was a shame to not win anything after we trashed all the 2nd VIIIs out there bar Maggie - their 1st and 2nd VIIIs times were so close that they might well have been matched boats. Nevertheless, it was a pleasing result, beating 10 college first boats and finishing within 40 seconds of our 1st VIII.
Thanks guys, a nice way to end 5 1/2 years' rowing with 1st and 3rd.

Just to say that to come 10th overall is a huge improvement on last year and I'm so pleased that we managed to deliver where we've not managed to for a while.
Well done everyone.
