I think "willingness and ability to listen to, understand, and at least attempt to follow instructions" would be top of my list.

Degree subject (and thus "availability")?

You've also got to consider the post-Fairbairns Dinner bop.

So "Ability to swim" then?

Or does the WPR have air-con these days?

It's not that they don't want to follow your instructions, it's just that novices are programmed in the following way:
Coach: 'Ok, just try to sit up a bit straighter'
Novice: hears 'Pull harder, less effectively and sit in a more awkward position'
Coach: 'Er, ok, well just try not to rush the slide so much..'
Novice:hears 'Pull harder, less effectively....'
etc., ad infinitum.

In fact, you can substitute 'Novice' for 'Any rower' with the addition of 'what IS this joker telling me anyway? I already know how to row..'

Or possibly something more along the lines of "willingness and ability to listen to, understand, and at least attempt to follow instructions".
