What is the fastest you have covered 2000m on a still rowing lake?

Does anyone know how fast the 1st 8 were at Notts City regatta in 2001 - when we lost S4 but won S3 after de Was this also the time that we were late, with most of the crew standing at Nottingham station with less than an hour to the start. The unmarked transit van screeches into the car park, 6 people pile in, and it screeched off again, doing a lap of the car park first for added effect. Sort of like an immigrant gangmaster.

I was driving it.I suspect our time was quite glacial - it was my second ever outing on bowside and thus I can't imagine us doing any better than a 7++

On that occasion I'm almost certain we recorded sub-6:10

Definitely remember _that journey_ and Simon's "telling JPD to relax" was more like "stop rowing like a f**king novice" (which was entirely justified).

I'd just like to make it clear that unsolicited coaching in an outing or race is very annoying and should not be done. In this case, I had asked JPD before the second race, having been biting my tongue a bit in the first race. You weren't rowing that badly; you were just trying to take more strokes than anyone else in the crew (were ITV monitoring you or something?). I just needed to remind you that some time on the slide would be useful.Thinking even harder about the day: it was Steph's first race on a lake, so she understandably stuffed up getting us attached; we were late for the start so got an offical warning from the starter - Mark Blandford-Baker; Mark later told me that he would have been within his rights to DQ us as we should have had a second warning for not wearing matching kit; and I was subbing in to the 1st 8 in one of my only two outings that term and indeed my first time out since the Saturday after Lents. Weren't we also getting changed in the back of the transit van? And then we came home with pots. Genius.

Simon said: I'd just like to make it clear that unsolicited coaching in an outing or race is very annoying and should not be done. I disagree. Unsolicited abuse during an outing, especially if expletive laden and deliberately provocative is highly amusing. Especially if you are criticising a cox who almost invariably does a bad job (this applies to most of them). CSOHFs, boat-leaving incidences and self-binnage only add to the fun.Seriously though, if someone has something to say about my rowing during an outing, I'd prefer to hear it when I've got time to do something about it, rather than after a few drinks at formal hall when I probably won't even remember it. Maybe I'm in the minority here though? As for racing, I agree that long diatribes are inappropriate, but a few choice words like "relax" or "pull harder" can make a difference to the overall performance and are worth making.

Simon said: And then we came home with pots. Genius. Indeed. I hope the (currently) 62% of people who have never done one of these races get themselves down to Dorney or Holme Pierrepont in the coming season to grab themselves some silverware / pottery. Multi lane racing is quite different from side by side and well worth the experience.I've just returned from the NZ Nat. Schools which is held on a stunning glacial lake and features eight lane racing. Looking at the standard (three eights went sub six minutes despite freezing water temperatures), I'm not surprised that this country with a population of just four million is right up there in world rowing.

I think in training it's better to wait until you're spinning rather than mid-piece; if it's a boat-wide issue then really the cox or steerer should pick it up and say something. In a race then the odd word to the person in front is OK. I think in this case I just had to say the same odd word ("relax") to JPD every other stroke. It was like sitting behind a border collie.

I hope all of this year's novices are paying attention to the professionalism with which First and Third approach off-Cam racing... :-) Seriously though, this is a bad example of organisation (albeit not entirely atypical) and loads of fun; it's well worth doing (and doing it right). w.r.t. talking in the boat, I agree with RTT - a few well chosen comments are very useful. However, a full blown discussion or lecture in the boat is not useful mid-outing (coaches and coxes should bear this in mind too).
