The results for all our crews can be found in full on the May Bumps results page. Our top crews performed well - the May VIII stayed level at 9th, whilst the 2nd, 3rd and 5th VIIIs all rose comfortably. The women's 1st VIII went up 1. Many of the lower crews suffered, but the club is proud of everyone's efforts - most notably those of the 4th VIII - who remained the highest 4th VIII on the river - and the 6th VIII who avoided spoons with a gutsy and exciting row on the final day. 2nd VIII in MS4 8+ With John Earl and Joe Grundy subbing for Matt Byrne and Hugh Colvin/Martin Peck In our heat we had a strong row to come second to Emma I (the Head Crew) by only 1 second in a time of 3:09 (only 3 seconds off the MS4 8+ course record)! Heat winners went straight into the Final, second place to the repercharge. In the repercharge, we again had a good row, although not as aggressive as in the first race. We lost to Winchester School. Stern IV in MN 4+ In the largest event of the day with 20 entries Our heat was our first race of the day. We had a very good start and surged to a very smooth 38. After 300m we were 2 lengths up on our opposition, at which point the rate dropped and we held our lead to win our heat in 3:37. In the semi, with two crews going through to the final, and with Will and I trebling up, we had decided that if we were a comfortable second after 500m we would just aim to hold that. In the race, despite being second at 500m we pushed through our opposition to take the lead. At 750m, they had obviously taken the rate down to save themselves for the final. We followed their change to remain about a length in front. In the final, as in our heats, we lost ground off the start. At 500m Sam told us we were rowing through them, and despite two near-boatstopping incidents between then and the line we pushed all the way to take the win in 3:24 (the course record for MN 4+). MS4 4+ In the heat (from Cox): Sam Adams, Henry Clouting, Will Thorne, Maris Goldmanis, Dan Walker. Jon Davies for Henry Clouting in the repercharge. I didn't see the heat, but from what I could gather the crew had a technical row to claim second, and a place in the repercharge. The repercharge was not a great race - we had jumped straight from the VIII to the IV, with Will and I having done the MN 4+ just before that. The boat felt very heavy, and at 600m it was obvious we were out of contention, so we took the rate down to save ourselves.

The 2nd men won yet more pots today!! Well done, guys. Our results in the the Cambridge 99s regatta may be found here - our thanks to John Earl for collating all the information from the day.

Congratulations to the third men's VIII who won pots (handsome glass bottomed pewter tankards) at the Cam sprints on Sunday. Success was also enjoyed by John and Neil in a pair, and Sarah and Sally who rowed with recent club leavers in a IV. First and Third was also represented in the Head2Head (John Earl in his single scull!), and at Bedford on Saturday, where the women's 1st VIII and the men's 2nd VIII gained yet more race experience. The Head of the Cam and Nottingham City Regatta were both last weekend. Our men's 2nd VIII travelled to Nottingham and enjoyed some exciting side by side racing, and was also pleased to post better times than Downing II. The men's lower boats squad fielded two crews for the Head of the Cam in Cambridge, and the women's squad, one. Our website has been updated with all the relevant results.

Because of yet more gusty winds, the Women's Head of the River Race, which our 1st women's VIII travelled down to row in today, has been cancelled. It is a great shame particularly since college women's crews never usually have the chance to row it, because it often clashes with the final day of the Lent Bumps.
4th Mar '02	The Lents	by mcp
The Lent Bumps last week saw a good deal of success for 1st & 3rd. The men's 1st VIII saw its first bump in Lents or Mays in two years. It turned itself around after dropping to both Caius and Maggie, to end up third on the river - down just one place after bumping Emmanuel on Saturday. The other men's crews also performed well, rising two or more despite loosing a day's racing due to heavy winds. Unfortunately, luck did not go the way of the women's 1st VIII - which was hampered by obstruction ahead for most of the week and overall also fell one. The women's 2nd VIII enjoyed themselves by rising a well earned two places in their three days. Our website has descriptions of all the races and plenty of pictures of our crews and other boats on the river. Many thanks to Richard Spencer, Jonathan Davies and Chris Stone for providing most of them - and there are more to follow soon. There are also some pictures from the Boat Club Dinner and bop - thank you jpd.
22nd Feb '02	Getting-on-Race	by arr
Two women's crews, the 2nd and 3rd VIIIs both competed in the Getting-on-Race this afternoon, racing other college lower boats to try and win places in the Lent Bumps next week. The 2nd VIII, who have been performing to a high level recently, had a very controlled row, despite a slight incident approximately 15 strokes from the end. Their race was well together and powerful, and showed good potential for the remainder of this term, and next. The 3rd VIII, who until last night didn't exist, and only today had their first outing (the race), had a brilliant row, including a nice little scrap with a Christs men's VIII about 100m from the finish line. RTT, complete with CULRC lycra, showed surprising competency in his coxing, and steered a good line around the corners, helping his crew to register a very respectable time. Well done to all those who raced today, especially the 3rd VIII, many of whom were dragged in at short notice! (1 reply...)

Congratulations must go to the women's 2nd VIII who missed penants by a mere 4 seconds yesterday - beating the men's crew and finishing just 8 seconds behind the 1st VIII... an impressive performance. I'll add the results to our site tomorrow, but the official results are here. (1 reply...)

Having watched most of the day's races, I have uploaded details of our crews' performances in today's Pembroke Regatta. Head to "Results" to see them. Note that at present all the reports and opinions are my own and are not officially endorsed; if you wish to make any additions or changes simply use the feedback page! Whilst it hasn't been the most spectacularly successful day, watching the races from the towpath is brilliant fun - well worth the trip if you are ever able to.
