17th Nov '01Novice Men Win!by jpd
The Men's Novices stormed the Winter Head today, (almost) sweeping the (novice) board.

The 1st Men's Novice VIII came 2nd in M Stu Beg 8+ (losing to Westminster School), in a time of 10:34 (faster than last year's 1st VIII!).

The 2nd Men's Novice VIII came 9th in M Stu Beg 8+, the second fastest college 2nd VIII (losing by 3 seconds to LMBC II). They crashed at Grassy (not Peter Brandt stylee), and were 9 seconds quicker than LMBC II over the second half of the course. They clocked a time of 11:23 (they lost an estimated 18 seconds in the crash, which would have put them in front of LMBC I!).

The 3rd Men's Novice VIII came equal 15th (with a Kings College London boat), the fastest (and only) 3rd VIII, beating Magdalene II and Jesus II in a time of 12:13.

The 4th Men's Novice VIII came 17th, in a superb time of 12:23 (only 10s slower than the 3rd VIII).

The 1st Women's Novice VIII came 5th of the Cambridge colleges (behind LMBC, Pembroke, Christ's and Magdalene) in 12:35.

The 2nd Women's Novice VIII came 9th in their category, in a time of 13:58.

The 1st Men's VIII won ARA Novice 8+, in a time of 8:59 (their second race), and came 4th in Student Senior 8+, behind Kings College London, Emma/LMBC composite and Jesus, in a storming time of 8:42.

The 2nd Men's VIII came 7th in Student Novice 8+, in 9:32.

A big thanks from the MLBCs to all coaches, subs, bank parties etc. who have enabled these fantastic results.

17th Nov '01Cambridge Winter Headby mcp
The results from today's racing are out - here. Since most of us are away training tomorrow, for a full summary of our performances and pictures and stuff check back late tomorrow or Monday.
A quick scan shows the 1st novice men going fastest of all novice crews, the women's novices coming 5th, and the men's 1st VIII posting the 5th fastest college time in a closely fought battle... a result we fully intend to improve on in Fairbairns... Any other stats, anyone? (2 replies...)
15th Nov '01Queens Ergsby RN
5 1st + 3rd boats raced at Queens Ergs. All of whom looked menacing in their Extermin VIII t-shirts. Jonny Boy, who we 'won' last year, also made an appearance to support the novice women of 2001.
The 1st novice women were the first 1st + 3rd crew 'race' (if thats an appropriate word?). We decided to enter the newly chosen fixed crews into the competition, and not just the best erg times. This makes their performance is even more credible. They came 3rd in their heat, with p.b's from over half the crew. A p.b by at least 2 seconds was put in by bow girl Hannah Barry, despite her falling off her seat. It was a strained heat, with new rules (that we didn't know about) put in and taken out again within about 5 mins (when the computer system worked and then broke down!).
We met the 2nd VIII at Great Gate (after a break for pizza), and used this opportunity to tell the 1st VIII that they had got through to the final - coming 8th overall.
There were also fantastic performances form the 2nd VIII. Being a rower down, the amazing Emily Chappell offered to do 2 500m pieces for us. She gave everything for her first one, collapsing off the erg, only to get back on a few minutes later to put in another respectable performance.
The 1st VIII's final was at 10.00, and was delayed (meaning that the beautiful and diligent women's lower boats captains had been at Queens for over 5 hours).
As the standard this year was so high, we decided that our aim for the evening was to come top 5, which would mean moving up significantly from 8th. Fantastic perfomances were put in by everybody, Hannah pulled 1.53 (managing to stay on her seat this time!), Nonny pulled her first sub 1.50. Everyone gave it everything. We don't know the official results, but we finished 3rd.
The boys did well, with the 1st VIII getting to the final, coming 7th overall.
Photos will be on the website soon. (1 reply...)
11th Nov '01Head of the River IVsby mcp
The IVs head is a huge processional head race involving 550 boats on the River Thames. It is our chance to challenge the likes of Pinsent and Cracknell in the same event...!
Both the 1st men's and 1st women's IVs went and raced it - the men getting within 3 mins of Pinsent's time ;-) There are some more details on our results page and a few pictures. (1 reply...)
1st Nov '01University IVs, Day 4by mcp
Most unfortunately, at short notice the Light IV is unable to make our race this afternoon, and all possibilities of subs or rescheduling it have been explored without success.
With all the crew now at 'full fitness', it is a great shame to be missing the opportunity to see to what extent we could have improved upon the weekend's performance.

Get out and support the 2nd men's IV at 2pm - they are now our soul crew still in the hunt for glory in the Uni IVs and are up against Christ's II. (1 reply...)

1st Nov '01Uni IVs semi-finalsby mcp
In a good race, the men's 2nd IV, our final hope for a win in the Uni IVs, have lost to Christ's in the semis by 6 seconds. More information will follow.
31st Oct '01University IVs, Day 3by mcp
The 2nd men were beaten by LMBC II in the Autumn Head, so had to fight hard to win their place in the Semi Finals tomorrow.
Our Uni IVs results page has descriptions of some of the races so far for those who are interested - thank you to everyone who has written one.
Sadly the women are now out of the IVs altogether, after their 2nd IV (incl. a couple of subs) lost to Catz 4.
30th Oct '01University IVs, Day 2by mcp
The men's 1st IV had a superb row this afternoon, attacking the favourites, Christ's, and loosing by just 3 seconds. Well done guys! Something of an improvement over the 40 seconds deficit at the weekend....!?
The 2nd men's IV and the Coxless IV also cruised comfortably through the day's races, beating Tit Hall II and Jesus respectively. More details to follow.... (3 replies...)
30th Oct '01University IVs, Day 1by mcp
Four of the club's six senior IVs were due to race on Monday, but two went straight through to the 2nd round when their opposition scratched.
Meanwhile, the 1st women's IV cruised through their first round against Magdalene, winning comfortably by 3 lengths, but sadly came up against the powerful Peterhouse in their 2nd round, and the men's 3rd coxed IV met Catz II, and both crews have been knocked out.
