Marathon Erg, Mich Term 2023

Having been bitterly disappointed to miss the Lent Term incarnation of this due to illness, I decided that 12pm the day after BCD was a good time to (try to) corral a large group of people into doing a marathon? Doing Fairbairns twice the day before was excellent preparation, of course, and the last erg I did before was a 2K over a week prior.

I really appreciated the support of those who came and fed me bananas (for the first 2.5 hours) and chocolate (for the last 25 minutes), or enabled me to drink water without stopping. The technique of banana delivery did improve throughout with my uvula getting less bashed each time.

Perhaps less so the support of those same people who decided to do a rate 18 2K next to us? It makes it hard to stay in the zone, but 7:07.2 and 7:14.9 ain’t half bad.

My final recorded 2k (2195-195 to go) was 7:48.1. I had planned to try to go sub-7. What egoism!

The second “History of Byzantium” podcast (on the development of the legal code) was much better than the first (revolt under Justinian), but I should stress that I feel neither are ideal for a marathon erg.

Still, that was a lot less painful than I thought that it would be, on the whole, and hasn’t even delayed the completion of my example sheet by very much.
