Not the result we were looking for, nor representative of the last week's rowing.
Fairly good start, settling into a solid rhythm at a high - probably unsustainable - rate. Catches were going in well and my hopes were high as we powered under Emma footbridge.
Alas, the concentration started to slip as we came under Elizabeth Way. Already heads were turning to look at the blades and people were reaching for a little too much at the catch. Possibly this was slightly due to the rate, but nevertheless the focus wasn't where it should have been.
Of course, we all know that looking at one's blade guarantees 'unexpected seat failure' (all the boat's fault) and/ or crabbing. Rather than taking the time to calm down from these incidents - I'm not sure my excited shouting was what was needed - each restart was more panicked than the last. We limped down the reach with six rowers, a broken crew.
Still, hats off to the guys for keeping their heads up and for the immense legs-backs pushes that really could have made a lot of difference. Also, we managed to go faster than all the women's novice crews so it can't be ALL bad.

Time only - From Chesterton to finish
Time: 11:35
Time: 11:35
Pretty disastrous beginning to be fair which brought the competition to an abrupt end, leading to racing for time only, timed from Chesterton.
Starting off not straight led to bowside crashing into a barge barely 20m from the start.
The crew were quite quick to react, only for confusion between 'wind it up' and 'hold it up' to lead to very confused rowers and a very suprised bankparty. Surprise was followed by horror as screams of 'hold it up' from the bank preceded a second crash into a barge a few places down. This led to bow taking a significant blow to the chest, but he was courageous enough to keep going.
Third time, VERY unlucky.
Bowman met a third barge again just before Elizabeth Way at speed, leading to a scary meeting between bow and his oar. The bowman was launched right out of his seat into the river, head first, in front of the bank party.
Boat brought in as bow man went back to the boat house, leaving the crew completely confused and exasperated.
Raced for time shortly after the IVs with Jij subbing in, sitting at seven.
Racing for time was relatively good, although the rhythm displayed didn't look like the excellent rhythm that was demonstrated so well by the crew in the outings leading up to the race - probably due to a combination of panic and the unnerving start. You clearly had the ability, unfortunately it could not be demonstrated when it was needed.
But heads up guys, don't let this put you off, and learn from this. Let's hope nothing like that happens again.

Unlucky not to do significantly better. There was a commited row from the boat, unfortunately Seat failure at 4 meant that the race was rowed in 6s and considering this the time was pretty good. Girton slowly gained over the length of the course, and I think on a good day you could have beaten them giving you a place in the top 25 boats on the river.
So not the best end to novice term, you are just going to have to come back for lent term then...

Congratulations girls - the best you've ever rowed which is all we could have asked for. A really nice controlled start, settled into our rhythm early and held it for the whole course. Took Chesterton a bit wide, but recovered well and a really excellent push from the P&E to the Railway Bridge (complete with much grunting from Fiona and "come on"s from Catherine!) saw the boat speed pick up another notch and us start to fly along the reach. But we held on right til the end and kept pushing even through the finish point. Everyone was absolutely knackered afterwards, which is the sign of a good race :)
So proud of you all for today, it was a great way to end off a fantastic term, and hope that you've enjoyed rowing as much as I've enjoyed coaching you. All that's left to do now is to enjoy tomorrow night, potentially complete with DVD documentation...

3rd women's novice VIII, Coached by Sarah Stoneman and Christian Mertes, 2nd division
45th women's 8+ overall, 3rd third 8+
Time: 14:04.13
Time: 14:04.13
Facts first:
3rd third eight,
Beat 5 first eights (Sidney, Peterhouse, King's, Homerton and Tit Hall)
Beat 6 second eights (New hall, Peterhouse, Homerton, Tit Hall, Downing and St. catz)
I'd say that's a pretty solid result (although Disney 2 did beat Disney 1). Anyway as far as the race went:
The marshal said go we didn't. He looked perplexed Kristina sorted herself out with a little too much interference from my side I have to admit. Set off on Kristina's go, straight into the bank, the reasons being 3fold: me interfering , Kristina not being straight and half of strokeside airstroking on the first stroke (that was a mouthful).
We pushed off in front of Jesus boat house and wound it straight from there. As a result we weren't quite up to speed at the start line. Didn't matter to much though because the crew settled into a good rhythm coming out under Emma Footbridge. The push out of QE Bridge worked well bringing the boat back up to speed so that by the Willow tree we were only 10s down on NW2. We more or less held that till Chesterton FB where we were 15s down. A big lift on the legs once we were straight sent us off towards the railway B. This was the best push off the race with a massive change in boatspeed.
Having done pretty well until then, we lost a lot of time between the P&E and the railway B. Me staying on meadowside and almost falling off my bike in the mud probably didn't help. At the railway B we were suddenly almost 50s down on NW2. A last hard push out of the bridge sent us onto the reach where a motivational "I can see the boat in front (Homerton W2, who we beat)" came from Kristina. The wind to the finish was good, some solid power in the water as far as I could see from the bank. Only downside: we crossed the line 1 min slower than NW2 and with Kristina couting down strokes and getting to the number 6, oh well better luck next time.
All in all a good race and I think NW3 can be really proud of their time.
One last point: we did have a couple of minor crabs from Louise at stroke + 2 complete overheads from her, one just after QE bridge and one on the reach, funnily enough the two parts where we didn't actually loose that much time.
