1st men's VIII, 1st division

The first VIII are great.
They actually drew with Caius. Robinson made up the one second gap so they wouldn't have to split the prizes because they're poor.
They would have beaten Caius soundly if they had had a 6 man with muscle and energy.
For the 6 man his second race of the day was very enjoyable but extremely painful. The group shower afterwards was worth it though. Thanks guys.

A good improvement from the Peterborough race, but the result shows there's a lot of hard work to do in the next couple of weeks. We look forward to it.

We agreed before the race that for every good minute of rowing Honey would remove an item of clothing and every minute of bad rowing she would put one back on. When I say we, the stroke thought it a fabulous idea and that was about it.
Having tightened strokes nuts on the way down (they were coming loose) we were set for a typically majestic and commanding race. True to form we charged out of the blocks like a Grand National winner with afterburners.
We rowed like demons for 59 seconds before there was a slight wobble meaning Honey remained fully clothed. This pattern repeated all race, 59 seconds of brilliance and then one weaker stroke let us down. We need to start taking advantage of the fact we have a female cox. (The words 'fact we have a' can be removed from the last sentence).
We posted yet another speedy-gonzalez time. We left our bumps chasers in the same way a Ferrari leaves a Skoda at the lights; a Skoda that's in reverse. And we're pretty at the same time.
Finally if anyone talks about 'rating' any more the stroke will not be responsible for his actions. If we can get say 4 or 5 minutes of consistently good rowing (7 or 8 if it's a cold day requiring extra layers) then the rate will rise all of its own accord you can be assured...

Well Dan......the rating..... Won't say much on it, but I thought it was a lot better than it has been, fairly sharp but still quite relaxed.
It felt as though we put down a lot work, and although the reach wasn't great, overall I was very happy, especially given that we beat Catz 1, Corpus 1 and only a second off Sidney 1. Shame we didn't get Binson 2 though....

A good row overall, but seat failure at Ditton which resulted in only 6 rowing until the railings cost quite a lot of time. I think there would have been a good chance to overtake Wolfson M2 had the seat not come off.

I was very pleased with this performance. The race was controlled and powerful; the main improvement I'd like to see is for this to be carried up a couple of pips higher. Unfortunately Peterhouse also entered a last minute IV+, so we didn't win (but did beat Peterhouse's 2nd VIII!).
The race felt pretty damn good considering our lack of experience in smaller boats, though the planned push out of Grassy to the Plough Pub never materialised. That might have something to do with why we hadn't emptied the tank by the end -- I felt far too fresh on the paddle home. So yes, a higher technical standard than I'd expected, but we must work harder.

A neater and tidier row than last week at Peterborough, but the power lacked throughout, which is reflected in our disappointing result (last week we were clocking similar times to Pembroke and LMBC W1, this week Pembroke and LMBC W2 beat us).
Hopefully we can combine the power and aggression from Peterborough with today's neatness over the next two weeks.

Hhm. Stern 5 barely had enough time to get some dry kit on and hop from Sirens/Margot into Denys. Crew Hockey fiend Zoe came limping straight off the ice at Peterborough, in short Danielle and Caterina were the only non-invalids...
The row up was good, we looked a lot tidier than the crews around which we carried through to the race. Where the Head of the Nene had been chaos there was control but there was none of the mindless brutish resolve that kept us spacking over the 5k course at Peterborough in about the same time as Pembroke and Maggie.
I reckon we were just too drained from our first race. Pembroke Regatta should provide better stimulus for bumps charts speculations...

Wow - we had an awesome row! :) The whole race was well controlled with good rhythm and loads of power going down. We ground the Clare boat down over the course, finally overtaking them just before the finish, and beating their time by nearly a minute. It was a great race. :)
As Iain would have put it: effortless. It felt like we could have gone for another 2k... until we crossed the finish line.

I am sure not many 2nd/3rd VIII composites sported a 1st Men's VIII rower in their cox's seat. Thanks for coxing, Tom.
Let's hope that in Pembroke Regatta, we manage to have our proper crews with everyone racing on their specific sides...

I think in hindsight pulling in for a breather halfway up the reach was probably a mistake. There were also a broken footplate, a broken seat and an overhead-crab to contend with. Having said that, the rowing was pretty good bar the catastrophies, if a little rushed.
This was an eventful race, to say the least. The guys recovered well from a series of crabs and footplate/ seat incidents, but inevitably their time was effected by the minimal time spent with all VIII rowing.
There were some very good pushes, especially towards the end, and consistently good effort from everyone from start to finish. Looking promising for bumps.

I thought that was a really good row. You all made up for my bowside incompetence allowing me to row blade square most the way and now that i've recovered i can say it was good fun.
