The Club's Boats

Mary Gwyneth

Maker: Janousek
Made in: 1982
Bought in: unknown

Mary Gwyneth was a very early Janousek plastic boat - the company was not formed until 1981. It was the club's only coxless IV. The River Cam is too congested for extensive use of coxless boats to be useful so the boat saw only light use - in general once a year for the period running up to the Light IVs competition of the University IVs.

The whole boat was only a foot or so shorter than coxless IVs and the long bow section was rumoured to be solid polyfiller after a number of serious crashes in the 80s and early 90s. Nevertheless, it was a reasonable boat to row in, the biggest complaint often being its narrowness which tended to shred Will Thorne's all-in-one.

Mary Gwyneth met her tragic and untimely end in an unfortunate incident on Peterborough's rowing lake prior to the University IVs in 2003, and was replaced by Michael Proctor early in the next year.
