Well! No correct answers then... in fact the race was abandoned only about half an hour after the start as various crews began to sink in the rough water. Looking forward to seeing some photos!

(I reckon CUBC had a splashboard this time...)

Apparently CUBC had a pump. Lessons learned from the boat race last year perhaps!

My crew was marshalling near to Barnes Bridge, just upstream of where the racing crews started to have real difficulty. We could see in the distance huge amounts of spray being kicked up from every stroke on each boat.

After the 46th(ish) crew, no more crews came past and we could see the river police with flashing lights hurrying to the scene somewhere up the course. A marshal then said that the race had been abandoned at the request of the PLA. Everyone then seemed to turn back and chaos ensued above Barnes Bridge. An Edinburgh (maybe Uni) crew hit us, but our boat wasn't damaged - one of the crew had a dark blue top with 3 gold hoops on. I couldn't see who it was without my glasses on! Any takers? Once through Barnes and heading back to our boating spot we all thought that the conditions weren't all that bad at first - but then we got close to Chiswick Eyot - and the wave side increased massively - we saw an upturned Empacher on the Surrey bank, Leander II's boat upside down in 2 pieces on the Middlesex bank, and our Veteran VIII had a grandstand view of no less than 9 of the top crews sinking in front of them as they waited for their race. Disappointment not to race as we had done some reasonable times at regional Heads, and were hoping to go up quite a lot - but in the end - relief that we got back ok without trashing our boat.

It looks like someone voted retrospectively... In any case, I think we were all confident that we'd done enough to merit a top 88 finish.

Someone on the pub crawl told me (so it must be true) that this may be something to do with Alla Doubrovina, who is now there and coaching (and possibly lending kit to the people she coaches?)...
