1st men's novice VIII, 1st division

3rd fastest
Time: 10:02
Excellent start with only ~10 strokes before the start line. Good speed down to Green Dragon corner, after which we slowly overtook Trinity Hall NM1- were clear by the railway bridge. Then overtook Corpus Christi much faster on the way down the reach and were ahead by the finish. 10'02" very cold (1C f/l -2C) and foggy
Jesus came second with a time of 10'01"- some debate within the crew whether the overtakes cost us time due to extra rudder usage and non optimal racing lines, or helped by providing motivation to the crew. Correct answer left as an exercise to the reader
(Alexander Watson)
The overtakes cost us time. We came second. QED (Elnoy Greenenko)

There was a crab in this race. An unfortunate event, but they're doomed to occur now and then. In this case, I really wish that it had happened earlier on (rather than a bit after the white bridge), as while - before the crab - they had seemed to row decently, putting in a creditable performance for an NW1, the crab changed quite a lot. They rowed well, rated higher, rowed in a more relaxed fashion, and made Zara, Polly, and I really quite pleased and proud. Had they crabbed just before the start, and rowed like the second half the whole way through, then that would have been an excellent performance.

It was good to see potential partially fulfilled, especially after injuries and illness had rather frustrating effect on sessions. They should be happy with what they've shown that they can do, even if it wasn't quite what it could have been. (Thomas Frith)

Quite a nice row, really. Certainly an enjoyable one to bankparty, with fairly commendable technique by and large. Lots of effort clearly put in while rowing to make a successful race for NW2. Hopefully, they feel appropriately proud. (Thomas Frith)
