Emma Sprints (Division 1), Viper

1st round
Beat Magdalene NM1
On arriving at the boathouse, we found the NM2 had not left the elf hats out for us. This meant we couldn't contemplate losing in the first round, being the only crew not in fancy dress. This was quite an eventful regatta given that Jamie was injured after a collision with another boat on the row down and the cox box wasn't working so despite me shouting at the top of my voice, bow 4 couldn't hear anything. During the race, we were clearly the faster crew but we certainly didn't make it easy for ourselves with many crabs from everyone and Matt, who was subbing in, had his foot straps come off. Every time we had a couple of clean strokes, we would pull ahead several seats, but the crew kept the audience in suspense all the way to the finish by crabbing over the finish line. ( Song)
Quarter finals
Lost to Christ's NM1
This race was much better than the first, although there still were quite a few crabs and Matt stopped rowing again due to his foot straps coming off. Despite the loss, this was a good experience which we can take into Clare Novices. ( Song)

Clare Novice Regatta (Cup), Viper

1st round
Beat Peterhouse NM1 by 4 lengths
After a rather rough start, we had a brief blades clash with Peterhouse. Peterhouse crabbed and the cox decided it was necessary to hold it up and restart so we took a pretty big lead. The lead gave us the opportunity to get some panic-free rowing in though at one point a whistle from the bank made several the crew stop rowing for a bit. Should only have stopped rowing if Tony called it, but either way we carried on soon enough and crossed the finish with lots of room to spare. (Sean)
2nd round
Beat Hughes Hall NM1 by 1 1/2 Lengths
A much better start than in round 1! Much thanks to Neil for all of the kit and food between round 1 and round 2. My left foot came out of the strap in the first or second stroke, but fortunately that did not cause any disruption as my right foot-strap held. Again, the opposition crabbed early on and we maintained a strong lead throughout the duration. (Sean)
Quarter finals
Lost to LMBC NM1 Easily
Following some time back at the boathouse, the first thing the crew did together was take a pee on some trees near the marshalling area. Hopefully it's true that 'a crew that pees together, rows together.' The start was decent. Unfortunately, Stan caught a crab in the early part of the race and it was difficult to recover and we lost quite a bit on Maggie NM1. We seemed to be gaining on them a bit once we recovered, though, as we could hear their concerted grunts getting closer. (Sean)

Novice Fairbairn Cup (1st division), Viper

11th novice men's VIII
Time: 9:55
This was a good race in which we kept a steady rate and had a push off the railway bridge. Afterwards it transpired that there was some confusion over where the start and finish lines were and Oskar "300" Schortz revealed he could have pushed harder. After the race, we got out of the boat and witnessed some 'unusual' rowing styles from the boats after us. Then we had an interesting row back to the boathouse with the crew order reversed. ( Song)
