M1's first race of term after changing crew order on Thursday promised to be interesting, in particular after deciding to start off between Tit Hall and Maggie.
After some impressive roll-ups and some nice basking in the sunshine in the queue to marshalling, we set off down First Post Reach at a nice, loose rhythm, steadily gaining on Tit Hall ahead of us. Staying sharp round the corners we pushed out of them nicely, gaining boat speed down the Gut and Plough Reach.
And then we heard Maggie behind us as we came onto the Reach. Individual decisions were made to take one for the team and push individually. A concerted move coming past the Kink pushed them away, but they were quick to respond. Off the Railway Bridge we managed to regain some rhythm and hold them off, but it was evident that we had lost the focus on rowing neatly and together and were just desperately trying to get rid of them. This unfortunately culminated in an exciting side-by-side race to the finish line.
A good race experience, we walk away from it knowing that we must be and stay more impassive and composed, that it's about us, not them.

Despite major misgivings over the accusations of cheating likely to be levelled at black prince for having more than two practice strokes before fairbairns, two bpbc VIIIs raced winter head.
I was a little bit rusty to say the least. However the boat was moving reasonably and we improved over the course, from 31 down first post reach to a more lively 32.5 down the reach.
Giving away far more time to the crew of '07 and the boars head crew chasing over the first half than the second half, was less than ideal, but probably a fair reflection of the rowing.
McT felt pain apparently. He also thought that plough reach was his corner, despite it being straight.

This was entertaining, albeit I feel we would have gone significantly faster if I hadn't been so adamantly turbogash.
A decent start saw a reasonably chunky rhythm, and something that was a reasonable approximation of rowing for the length for FP reach, however FP was when things (from my perspective) took a marked downturn. I turned in on my usual (Read: Empacher) line, expecting to slide in the time honoured fashion. At this point the harsh application of rudder early in the corner saw us violently veer right, and we damn near stacked the inside of FP, which would have been a bit special. Down the gut I was mostly recovering from the fact that I was in utterly the wrong place, and failed hard again, by going for the wide entrance/tight exit line. This then led to us going wide for the entirety of the corner. Fail.
At this point the steering took a turn for the utterly bizarre - The entirety of Plough Reach was done on hard left rudder, and we were steadily drifting right (I've decided to blame McTiernan for this), and we were definitely not travelling in the direction the hull was pointing, which was strange. Ditton was miraculously undisastrous, and we proceeded with aplomb onto the reach.
Here, I abandoned the traditional 'straight line' approach to steering the reach, and provided an excellent example of the '3am cycle to the Newton Road' line which features violent diversions at random locations, all of which seemed to be more of a surprise to me than anybody else.
The rest of the race passed off with little incident - I am unable to comment much on the rowing, I was simply stunned by my own borderline impressive levels of incompetence.
Fortunately, my crew appear to have soldiered on with a degree more talent than me, and our time was actually pretty reasonable. It's good to see BPBC 'Trial VIIIs' doing pretty well, congrats to '07 for winning!

We set off from the boathouse (on time, which proved to be a mistake) with a Peter Summers blessing. The warm-up was somewhat premature as we then spent 45 minutes drifting foot by foot down to the white bridge (measured by how far and often Miles had to move his bike along the sidewalk).
Bursts on the reach felt chunky, rating 30. On arrival at the lock we seemed to be the only crew told to spin (and indeed the only crew complimented on our spinning). We confused ICSM by wishing them luck and set off, behind Caius and in front of Newnham. Our plan was to keep it simple, and put distance on Newnham. At Ditton the plan had to be swiftly changed to putting distance on Pembroke as they came round the corner instead of Newnham.
The start was good, winding to a nice 30. I was concerned that my legs weren't burning 10 strokes in, but I think we were all aware that we were setting ourselves up for a 2.5k race rather than a 4 minute piece. We kept it chunky to Grassy, and lifted out of the corner with a power 10. We took a nice line off this push and then Miles called for a plough reach burn. This caused the rate to rise with adrenaline, but we found a new rhythm coming round Ditton and held 32 for the rest of the race.
The cover dropped somewhat on the vacant expanse of the reach, but calls for pressure from within the boat spurred us on, powering through the railway bridge for our (moderate - I quite liked the rhythm) sprint for the finish.
Spirits were high at the finish, despite exhaustion. Without much pressure either from behind or in front, we were able to concentrate on our own rowing and row the race we planned. The result doesn't properly show how far we've come, but it gives us a target for the next two weeks. I'm proud of how we rowed in the race, of how we reacted to it off the start and held it at the finish. Now we just need to get massive.

We set off with a good rhythm, perhaps a slower rate than we were capable of, but it stayed at roughly the same rate for the whole race. Titan somehow managed to get around grassy and the other corners were all taken well, especially given that the rudder is bent.
When we got passed Ditton the fearsome/handsome sight of us cruising around the corner onto the reach caused the Maggie women in front to promptly crash. We then overtook and powered through to the finish. We were promised bunting for the finish line, instead we only got a piece of string with six letters attached. The Maggie women were so disappointed that they easied 50 metres before the finish and then crashed again.
This was a good solid row and it is looking very promising for Fairbairns.

In view of the unfortunate circumstances that the last two outings were badgered by weather and water, we went into this race having done no high-rate training whatsoever.
After a good paddle down with a few bursts and the usual pre-race faff, we started off in a strong and solid rate 26 all the way down First Post reach, clearly pushing away from the crew behind and gaining on the boat ahead. Spotless racing lines around First Post and Grassy corners, and a good push out of these gave us a very good and stable first half of the race. After Ditton corner however, the combination of a footstraps failure followed by a seat failure meant that we had to row a good part of the reach in sixes - and due to the confusion this caused in the boat hardly in time. We got it back together under the railway bridge, had a big push off it and held it well to the finish line.
Overall, a very promising introduction into high-rate rowing.
