A couple of weeks ago Catherine and I vaguely thought about entering STCS and did nothing about it until the entry deadline on Friday; we entered ourselves but didn't manage to get any outings in. Hmmm. Yesterday it seemed like a good idea to have a quick practise at the whole sculling lark, it couldn't be that hard, right? Iain kindly agreed to banksteer and coach us, not really realising what he was letting himself in for. Once we'd got the blades and the gates the right way round and pushed off we made rapid improvement but it definitely wasn't quite up to Henley standard. Another outing this morning soon sorted that out and by this afternoon we were getting a bit more confident, even managing to do a square blades slide build which yesterday would have resulted in almost certain capsize.
At the lock we were set off a good few minutes ahead of Ed Richardson, previous winner on STCS, CUBC and GB triallist; he overtook us by the end. Apart from that slight disappointment, the race was ok. We didn't crash, Catherine took some nice accurate lines (and some very nice scenic ones too), we got to the end, didn't fall in and most importantly did it all in very matching kit. I'm pleased we got out and did this race; it was an interesting sculling debut and certainly a platform to build on in the future - Henley next year?! :)
