Cambridge Rowing Triathlon, Mich Term 2000

A race lasting over two hours comprising cycling, running and rowing
Sun 10th December

The Triathalon Explained

The City R.C. Triathalon is an annual event. It's a bit like a normal triathalon but with rowing replacing the swimming. In this case it comprises a 25km (approx.) cycle first, then a 10km run and finally a 10km row. 10km is equivalent to a run from our boathouse to Baitsbite Lock and back. The cycle takes place out on Newmarket Road and the run then comes back in to Cambridge, joining the tow path at Baitsbite.

The result that counts is the total time for the crew to complete the whole course from the beginning of the cycling to the end of the rowing. This even included the time spent getting off your bike or putting the boat on the water! There is therefore little point splitting up - especially since it is possible to cycle much faster in a group if you slip-stream each other. Things for us went a little bit wrong, though, as you will see...

The event was organised by Cambridge City Rowing Club. At the bottom of this page there is a summary of the results of college crews and a link to Cambridge weather. Club members, please go here to add (or correct) results, crews or race reports.

Cambridge Triathalon IV

6th of 30 finishers, 3rd of 5 men's coxed IVs - after a nasty crash!
Time: 2:12:23
John came off badly at 25mph in collision with Jon, just two minutes in to the cycle. Sustaining only minor injuries, he continued using Julia's MTB, his own front wheel having been destroyed in the incident. All hopes of a good time in the cycling were therefore lost, especially with John now struggling to keep pace on Julia's unsuitable machine. Half way through the cycle the decision was made to split in to two groups to allow Jon and Tom a head start on the run, whilst Martin stayed with John, who was expected to be the strongest runner, to try and help out with some drafting assistance. Jon, Tom and John all therefore worked much harder than originally planned on the cycle, which makes our subsequent good time in the run, in which we naturally reformed in to a group, all the more pleasing. The rowing was pretty unpleasant since after two hours of racing most of us had 'hit the wall' pretty badly. Overall, quite an experience. [by the webmaster]
