Sara Devereux & Rebecca Wylie - WLBC

Sara - I'm a first year NatSci who started rowing in Michaelmas in NW1 and then W2 in Lent and Easter term. Next year I will have lots of time to focus on rowing as I am giving up one of my other sports and apparently the second year of NatSci is less demanding than the first!

Rebecca - I'm a first year Lawyer and I also started rowing in Michaelmas with NW1, then with W2 in Lent and Easter term. With my busy schedule this year I've had to learn to be organised but more importantly, I LOVE admin <3 !

W2 training in Michealmas

Being in W2 means we're extra motivated to form a W2 in Mich!

Encourage current W2/W3 to carry on rowing next year
Form a regular outing schedule at the beginning of term which will include:
- 1-2 coached erg sessions - individual erg sessions are boring and hard to get motivated for
- 4 outings a week
- Above is a rough guide and can be varied according to what W2 want to achieve next year as a crew - hopefully with the aim of bumping in Lents!

Novice training in Michealmas

Formation of crews as quickly as possible so that a regular outing schedule can be created and they can advance as a crew. Selection of crews will be done by:
- Working out how much people are willing to commit
- Small erg test to gauge fitness levels
- Less emphasis will be placed on technique as that will come with the increased training in fixed crews
Lots of tubbing sessions at the beginning of the term and continued tubbing even when crews are fixed to help improve technique
Before an outing make sure that the novices know what exercises they are doing to minimize confusion and clarify technical points on the ergs before going on the water

Beyond Michealmas

Encourage attendance of the winter rowing camp for those serious about rowing - this really helped improve my technique
Encourage W2 trialling (and for W1 for those with promising potential)
Hopefully form a W3 with regular training

Retention of novices

I feel that we have to work on keeping novices until Lent bumps as bumps is what Cambridge rowing is all about! Below are a few key points that should help with this:

Lots of REGATTAS - the best part of rowing!
Low commitment lower boats (i.e. not NW1/W2): 2-3 outings a week, NO ergs, minimal morning outings. This is for novices who enjoy rowing and the social side of the club but can't commit to it.

Socials, Socials, Socials

We're really keen to get swaps going with other boat clubs - first term of freshers' is all about swaps!!
Socials within the boat club - we would want to try and integrate the men and women's side a bit more e.g. through formals
