Rebecca Hann – Women's Lower Boats Captain
About Me:
I’m a first year mathematician who noviced in NW1 in Michaelmas 2010. In Lent, I rowed in W2 and was part of the W1/2 composite crew for WeHorr, and have now returned to W2 for the Mays. I can also (kind of) cox, having tried it in the Easter vacation. Being part of First and Third is great and I am keen to help and encourage novices into becoming active and enthusiastic members of the club.
Aims:
Before Term:
- Around results day, set up a novice rowing Facebook group aimed at Freshers to get them thinking about rowing and spam the Freshers’ groups with it.
- Next year I will be roomies with the Overseas’ Welfare Officer, which will give me the unique opportunity to encourage international Freshers to get involved before term even starts.
Michaelmas:
- Get as many people involved as possible through a huge stand at Chaplain’s Squash (complete with keen boaties), a WPR and a flexible tubbing timetable.
- Focus on different aspects of technique to ensure a good grounding in rowing for the future, but still get novices excited about all kinds of racing, from Queens’ Ergs through to Bumps and WeHorr in later terms or years.
- Have plenty of meetings, crew dinners and boatie formals to encourage the novices to feel they are part of the club and not just part of a crew.
Lent and Easter:
- Set crews quickly to make sure they bond together both on and off the water and progress with their rowing.
- Be in close liaison with the Women’s Captain to ensure talent is spotted and developed appropriately, making sure First and Third has the best possible crews for Lents, Mays and the future.
- Continue to support the progression of the novices into senior rowing by encouraging them to keep fit through the holidays and to participate in the training camp, the races and the social events through the year.
How I plan to do this:
Food, sticker charts and persistence.
