MLBCs
Alex Barrell – I am a second year mathematician who has been rowing every term of my University life so far. I have rowed for M2 this year having spent a year in the lower boats. I am looking forward to promoting the growth of the boat club by coaching and assisting in the training of the lower boats
Yimin Ge – I’m a second year Boatie, noviced at First and Third in Michaelmas 2009 and have been rowing every term since, including M1 for the last two terms. I’m occasionally also seen at Maths lectures, though feel that rowing has become such an important part of my life that I simply have to convince other people of its awesomeness to make this world a better place.
Jack Mills – I’m a first year mathmo currently rowing in M3. I’ve really enjoyed rowing so far and I’m looking to give something back to the boat club.
Steven Evans – I bring balance by not being a Mathematician, instead I am a first year NatSci. I noviced in Michaelmas and have enjoyed every moment, especially the last 500m of my 2k test.
Mich
- Recruiting novices from freshers AND higher years
- Make sure everyone is on one mailing list
- Arrange a Boat Club formal/other event
- Coxing recruitment is essential, work with next year’s Coxing Captain
- Races are for experience rather than good results
- Promote Clare Novices as it is a fun racing experience
- Encourage best ex-novices to participate on Training Camp
- Clearly communicate that we avoid early mornings
Lents
- Encourage best ex-novices to trial for upper boats
- Aiming for at least three lower boats
- Make sure we have outings as early as possible in the term in order to give everyone enough time to demonstrate potential before crew selection
- Promote sparring in order to ensure people have experience of rowing under pressure before bumps
Mays
- Emphasising that it is very possible to row and still do well in exams
- Crew selection as soon as possible after upper boats selection to give maximum preparation time for May Bumps.
General
- Keep lower boats fun and sociable
- Aim for long term high standard rowers
- Assign at least one LBC to each lower boat
- Set training/selection plan and follow it
- Consistency in coaching, making sure all coaches give the same messages regarding technique and attitude.
- Making sure external coaches know what’s going on
- Support any grad boats that are rowing regularly – put them in contact with coaches for example
- Make sure every lower boats member has attention, we want to avoid losing promising rowers
