Women’s Lower Boat Captains

My name is Lynsey Kay Porter and I’m a 2nd year BioAnth student - which luckily means I do no work! I rowed for the 1st Novice women this year, and the now row for the 2nd women. I started rowing because I got very drunk, and the following morning there was an email about tubbing times in my inbox. I carried on for the men.

My name is Amy Hewer and I’m a 1st year NatSci student. I rowed for the 1st novice women and have rowed for the 3rd women so far this year. I started rowing for the stash and the social life!

My name is Sorcha McGinn and I’m a 1st year SPS student. I rowed for the 1st Novice women and row for the 2nd women this year. I started rowing because Katie said she would cry if I didn’t sign up and I also thought it would be a good way to meet new people.

My name is Fran Rawlins and I’m a 1st year NatSci student. I rowed for the 1st Novice women and now row for the 2nd women. I started rowing as I signed up for everything in the first week and just got dragged in!

Plan:

We plan on getting as many freshers involved as possible - and as early as possible to ensure we have some good novice boats for Fairburns. We also intend to focus later in the year on the lower boats more to make sure that people that want to row have the facilities, coaching and interest in order to allow them to do as well as they possibly can.

Recruitment:

The Chaplin’s squash will be our main place to gather any freshers interested in rowing, but also during the first week we will try to advertise rowing as widely as possible to any one that may be interested in starting rowing through announcements in the bar, flyers and some organised drinking/eating events.

Also, we’re all having as many kids as possible to pressure them into rowing.

Novice training:

As said before, we intend on getting as many people involved as possible and will run sessions for tubbing as often as needed in order to get people on the water as much as they want. We intend on trying to get people involved as early as possible so we can have crew selection earlier to get some even stronger boats into Fairburns next year. Also, we intend on starting core and erging earlier to get people working in the boat more effectively earlier.

After tubbing, we will start getting people into fours before moving them into eights with lbc’s coaching and rowing in the boats with novices to help the novice coxes. We will liaise and work closely with the men’s lbc’s in order to ensure that we are following similar plans for getting novices quickly up to a good standard of rowing.

Making them stay!

We intend on making them stay by following a similar pattern to this year - lots of drinking and socialising! We intend on having as many formal swaps as we possibly can to ensure that everyone has a good time and forgets about their aching muscles!!
