Boat Race times by Bryn - Mon 28th Mar 2005, 1:47pm
In the build-up to the race on ITV they said that the Boat Race was timed to take place when the stream was at its quickest. But the BBC website says that Goldie beat OUBC by 3s. So at least one of these has messed up: (i) ITV (for not knowing about tides) (ii) the BBC (for not being able to time a boat race) (iii) Robin Williams (for not being able to pick the fastest crew) (iv) me (for missing something obvious) Can someone in the know help me out?

Im not sure. But Dave Biddulph gives unofficial times for the crews with Goldie being 6s slower than Oxford (and getting the same time as Cambridge). So it may be that the BBC got it wrong. However the Goldie/Isis race frequently posts a faster time. I think this is because it is notoriously difficult to predict exactly when the peak of the tide will be - particularly as they have to arrange the time of the race so far in advance. They do aim to have the blue boats racing at the peak of the tide though.

Dan said: I think this is because it is notoriously difficult to predict exactly when the peak of the tide will be Yes I think this is right - I believe it depends a lot on the amount of land water coming down (which is very little this year) and the height of the tide (which I think is influenced by atmospheric pressure?). |
