1st men's novice VIII

Queens' Novice Ergo Competition (1st division)

6th
Time: 13:21.7
Despite having the joint-fastest single 500 (thank you James Brownlie!), it was not to be. We won our ‘group’ of entrants, but unfortunately were crushed, losing by 35 seconds to Maggie. Thankfully, we beat our own senior crew by over 30 seconds.

Note that this had a sequential format, with the erg continually recording timing, so changeover periods were rather important. (Yes, this was prompted by comparing this time to that of previous years).

Emma Sprints (NM1 Division)

1st round
Beat Jesus NM1
The first race of Emma Sprints (for NM1) was characterised by two things: pink bodysuits and headbands (for the fancy dress), and a rather haphazard start (crab-filled, mostly in antiphase, and with plenty of air strokes). The headbands would prove to have staying power across the rest of our termly races, while the haphazard starts improved.
After being put behind by (significantly) more than a length, we proceeded to row in time, gaining rather quickly on Jesus, catching them at halfway, after which they promptly steered into a bush.

Quarter finals
Beat Caius NM1
Caius were dressed as bananas. Thanks to the cold and rain (4 degrees), our pink bodysuits were mostly covered, except for the sensible souls who wore plenty of clothes underneath originally.
We were once again put behind by over a length initially, though this time with a much better start. Catching them about three-quarters of the way in, this was the fastest race of our day by far, with at least some rumours suggesting a 2:02, where any of our other races were 2:17 at best. We needed it, as this was not a win with much room to spare.

Post-race, an individual from LMBC came over to thank us for beating Caius, which was pleasant.

Novice Fairbairn Cup (1st division)

4th
Time: 10:35
A tidy row, with good guts in the first half. Lost some legs by the time they got to the Railway Bridge, but carried it to the line. Great job by Sam Gerrard on the coaching front: notably the most together crew on the river today. (Forbes)
Seeing Arnaldo enter college through the Angel Court gate at 7am did not quite bode well. We counselled an hours sleep over attending photos.

The race was good fun, and felt strong despite the cold. Hearing "ARNALDO, SIT UP" after 500m was maybe not quite reassuring, but we held it together.

It was disappointing not to win, we know that it could have been possible, and that we were a strong crew.

Afterwards, the stairs up to Angel Court were hard. (Thomas Frith)
