BPBC 2nd men's VIII

Head of the Charles (Club VIIIs)

50th of 51 Club VIIIs
Time: 18:50.8
Many thanks to Ken for subbing into the cox's seat at the (very) last minute. Shame we weren't quite as good as the blue boat.

Good start, winding up quite high before settling into a vaguely sustainable pace. Our lack of fitness started to show during the second mile and a couple of blade clashes, (mini-) crab from Clive and loose backstay at 2 didn't aid our efforts to row fast.

A decent solid row, but we probably should have gone a little faster.

I'm sure Graham will give a fuller account when he gets back. (Matt)

Fairbairn Cup (Invitation VIIIs)

10th of 14 Invitational VIII's, 44th of 51 Men's VIII's
Time: 17:37
Met ATBH around 9am, and the crew were all introduced to one another. Decided that a two stroke practise outing would be sufficient to gel as a crew before the start of the race.

We went off rating 35 or so, cruised at 31-32 for most of the race and took it up for the finish. A good solid rhythm throughout was offset by a distinct lack of power through the drive phase, possibly due to a slight lack of rowing-specific fitness.

Christs M1 came past under the railway bridge and we noticed FaT M2 had closed slightly behind us in the later stages of the race.

All in all an enjoyable row, nice and tidy, but lacking a bit of purpose. Disappointed to find we'd come in behind Kings M1 (and FaT novices), but at least we beat the women ... (Matt)
