LADY MARGARET DEPOSED

Lady Margaret's hopes of retaining their place at the head in the Cambridge University Lent bumping races had a setback yesterday on the first day of racing on the Cam, when Pembroke caught them under the bridge. First and Third Trinity moved into third place when they caught Jesus in the Gap. (Fitz)

FIRST & THIRD MOVE INTO SECOND PLACE

When First and Third Trinity moved into second place in the Lents by bumping Lady Margaret tonight, Pembroke had a good two lengths of clear water behind them. This argues that they should survive the week, though Trinity may well close the gap. Lady Margaret have swopped their stroke and four in a do-or-die attempt, but Pembroke rowed 42 in the first minute and drew away at once. Lady Margaret never dropped below 37, but lost ground steadily to First and Third and were caught on Ditton Corner. (Fitz)

FIRST & THIRD OVERTAKE PEMBROKE

The Lents have now had three leaders in three days and it is the new wasp-striped vests of First and Third Trinity which will head the procession tomorrow. For the first time for many years, the top 16 boats all change places. Trinity rowed 43 in the first minute and were soon within a length of Pembroke. Round Grassy, Pembroke appeared to be holding; but by Ditton, Trinity were still at 39, gaining fast and made the bump below the railings. (Fitz)

FIRST & THIRD ROW HOME UNCHALLENGED

After one of the most complete General Posts for many years, First and Third Trinity came home in solitary state at the head of the Cambridge Lents on Saturday. Their immediate pursuers and Thursday's leaders, Pembroke, were caught by Queens' at the Railings. Lady Margaret completed a disastrous week by losing to Fitzwilliam at the Pike and Eel after looking more or less in control at the Railway Bridge. Fitzwilliam finishing fourth, have never been higher, Jesus College, beaten by Clare, can seldom have been lower.

TRINITY HOLD PRIDE OF PLACE

Trinity rowed over, in not particularly splendid isolation, in the Lent races on Saturday - the only crew to come through in the whole of the first division. They were well away from Pembroke when the latter fell to Queens' just above the railings. Trinity looked rather scrappy, at 35, above the railway bridge, but had nothing to drive them. Paddling, they looked strong and effective. (Fitz)
