A bit of wind and some drizzle, but nothing too serious. According to the Met Office, June and October are the joint wettest months in Cambridge.

M5 results in. Christ's M4 overlap Christ's M3 at Grassy, but the former fail to make it round the corner and so save their club a fine. They are followed by a three boat sandwich. Homerton M2 at the back make the bump, when easing off might have earned them the overbump... FaT Grad VIII bumped by Pembroke M4 in the gut.

W4 results in. In the Battle of the Boathouse, FaT W3 were bumped by Homerton W2 at the exit of Grassy.
by BJ - Fri 17th Jun 2011, 2:31pm
M4 results in. FaT M4 bumped by a sharp-looking Tit Hall M3 a few strokes after the out-flow. I'm always amazed by how many crews carry on at race pace when there isn't another boat within fifteen lengths in either direction.
by BJ - Fri 17th Jun 2011, 2:50pm
Still no carnage to speak of. Poor effort all round, chaps and chapettes.
by BJ - Fri 17th Jun 2011, 2:55pm
The W3 division is all pulled in and ready to go dangerously ahead of time, but fortunately there's a narrow boat coming through to calm things down.
by BJ - Fri 17th Jun 2011, 3:20pm
There seem to be some issues with W3 results, but I'll let you know when we have them. Look out for the first ambivalent green face in a while, as FaT W2 row over 3-4 lengths clear of Catz W2.
by BJ - Fri 17th Jun 2011, 3:27pm
W3 results in. Caius II, Queens II, Wolfson to rerow after M3. Apparently Caius crabbed off the start, Queens held it up and Wolfson bumped them. General confusion on the towpath as to why Caius didn't have the bump awarded against them.

Disaster. I'm getting low battery warnings...

Hello again. I remembered to charge my phone last night. Things I might have told you about yesterday, had I not been conserving power: in their rerow, Queens W2 parked gently on the oft-visited garden at the outside of first post corner, the 3-man of Churchill M2(?) set a new world record for the shortest period of time between the end of a race and the removal of a shirt (to be fair, he was ripped, but there was no one from Guinness there to verify it), and a Newnhamite described the motorway bridge as 'Newnham Bridge'. So not a lot, really.

There's a cruiser going down the course, so presumably the start will be delayed. The weather is better than yesterday, but I'm wearing more just to stop Iain looking smug. Apparently it rains a lot in Scotland. I don't have the Met Office data to back this up, but it's believable. Four minute gun just about to go.

M6 results in. A joy to watch, as always. Churchill M4 held it up in the gut to avoid disappointingly moderate carnage, restarted and finished two lengths off the overbump on a Downing rugby boat. They've been awarded a 'moral overbump'. There's a strong headwind on the reach that stopped most crews dead. Can't wait for W4, but I guess I'll have to.

M5 results in. FaT Grad VIII bumped by a blades-winning Hughes Hall M2 at first post corner. Addenbrookes were overbumped after one of their rowers stopped to wave to a friend. M6 results updated, as LMBC M6's bump was disqualified after John Dirac grassed them up for having a May colour.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 12:00pm
W4 results in. The reach took f-o-r-e-v-e-r. I don't think some of those girls will ever get in a boat again. FaT W3 were bumped by Christ's at the entrance to first post corner.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 12:36pm
M4 results in. FaT M4 condemned to spoons by St Edmund's M2 at the kink of first post reach. A pox on you, Eddies.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 12:56pm
Georgina on the move. Shouldn't delay things too much. Towpath starting to get busy. They're here to see some carnage, guys...

W3 results in, although the Newnham/Sidney overbump is still under discussion. FaT W3 were bumped by Catz W2 at first post corner. Behind them, a little earlier, Clare Hall caught a blades-denying boat-stopping crab and were bumped. Newnham stopped racing, with no obvious motive, and were overbumped. If they turn out to have had a legitimate motive, the overbump might be overturned.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 1:32pm
Overbump becomes technical row-overs. It seems that after bumping Clare Hall, the Emma cox put her hand in the air, which Newnham judged to be a concession. Although they were told that they were still racing, and had plenty of time to restart, there was sufficient confusion to rule in favour of the status quo.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 2:08pm
M3 results in. Serious carnage averted only by universally and unsportingly efficient clearing. As FaT M3 came into the gut there were still three clearing crews perpendicular to the racing line at Grassy, but they had miraculously disappeared within seconds. FaT were bumped at the exit of Grassy and became one of the eight crews parked on the outside of Grassy, along with the two on the inside. Caius M3 crashed anticlimactically onto the only empty bit of bank on the outside of Grassy, and a nearly-as-navigationally-challenged King's M2 made it far enough round to earn the bump.

It's started to rain. Boo.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 2:16pm
I've joined the crowd huddled under the railway bridge. I should have brought an umbrella.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 2:26pm
It's stopped raining. Hooray. W2 a minute or two underway.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 2:48pm
W2 results in. Nothing to report from the Plough Reach except for an incident-free mid-division punt crossing and a narrow boat owner taking many mobile phone snaps of Emma W2 parked by his boat. Keep checking www.voyeurrowingphotos.com.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 3:29pm
M2 results in. 2nd VIII headship changes hands at Grassy.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 4:14pm
W1 results in. FaT bumped by Tit Hall at the exit of Grassy. Mays headship for Downing.
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 4:16pm
Some thunder in the air. Apparently if separation between lightning and thunder gets to less than ten seconds then the crews have to get out of their boats. No sign of any lightning so far.

Great catch by First and Third on the row down, admired by Coker from Ditton. Who needs the Hunkmeister General?
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 4:43pm
FaT bumped by Catz just before the Plough. Top three on station give or take at the time. Catz must have gone off hard...
by BJ - Sat 18th Jun 2011, 4:59pm
M1 results in. 14 row-overs. Caius head of the Mays. |
