As has already been said, not the best row, but it did the job and got the nerves out of the way. Looking forward to something a bit more solid tomorrow.

I think 'OK' best sums up this race. Nothing terribly bad, but nothing amazingly good either, just plain old OK.

Horrible. I was so angry afterwards, even going for a run didn't cheer me up.

Today I heard Jenners say one of the best things a cox can say - "We're going to overtake Caius" - pity it was partly due to their "ex-novice catching a boatstopper".

I also loved our last 10 strokes - I have yet to feel a more purposeful release of the black pearl...

Finally exorcised the demons! Another good start and a solid row with some good rhythm. Especially pleasing to win by this much without having to unleash any killer pushes.

Damn. After building up to this race all day, it was pretty gutting not to win. Nothing particularly bad on our part, they just went faster.

Not bad for 20 minutes of 'tea-stirring' (to quote Emily). This was definitely not our best row ever - we'd been having problems adjusting to rowing head-race style rather than bumps style, and these were exacerbated by the fast stream and tail wind. It was a bit surprising to overtake Caius during the race (though the results indicate that they must've been way off form), and our conclusion at the end of the race was just 'OK', so it was very satisfying to see how our time compared to the other colleges, Blondie, and our hated junior rivals Headington School!

Awesome guys, that's a really good result! Especially as the stream wouldn't have been nearly as strong when you guys were rowing.

Embarrassingly bad. After spending every morning for the past two weeks ensuring I could row the course without crabbing or falling in, at firm pressure and a higher-than-paddling rate, whilst maintaining a reasonably straight line and steering around the non-existent bend without veering into the middle, I succumbed to a combination of nerves and unexpectedly strong head wind and managed to steer a slalom course involving many frantic half-crabbed steering strokes, and generally row like a completely spacky muppet. The only "good" thing was that despite under-rating the opposition by several pips, I was still in touch, and had I rowed at all decently, might have had a chance to take her when she steered for the bank just before the finish. Possibly. Instead I mistakenly wound it down about 10 strokes before the finish, thus ensuring that any official margin will be even worse than otherwise.

Our pack of rampaging (and more delicate) wild beasts walked all over Emma with ease. Pity that no-one else turned up to challenge us...surely they're not all scared already?
(average split time including changeovers 1:43.7 - I can't submit it in the Result description as it tries to add it to the overall time)

Eerm...according to the online results, we were actually third, beaten by Queens (??!!). Anyways...

A pity not to get the pots, but not a bad result regardless; just imagine what might happen if we have more than two outings together pre-race!! I thought our start and build were pretty good, but we didn't deal well with the gusts of wind as we came round Ditton, nor the push for the finish. Inbetween however there was some quite decent rowing, though plenty to improve upon in the next few weeks.

Event: May Bumps 2007 - Wednesday

Our first attempt was committed but frantic. Contigency plan #31 failed to find us our rhythm, but regardless, we had closed to half a length (?) coming out of grassy. Perhaps rather negligently, considering the carnage caused in recent years, our myriad plans had failed to include Downing-induced river blockage, and we were foiled by a river full of stopped boats.

Iain and JPD made herculean efforts to get back from M1/M2 in time for our second attempt (not to worry, contigency plan #107 dealt with heart attacks), and we were very much boosted to hear of M2's bump on Caius just before our start. This row was much tidier than the first (possibly helped by the relative lack of wash?!) and we hit a good rhythm coming down first post reach. They held us off with a couple of good pushes but we got them outside the Plough. Job done.

I had avoided posting a report for this race because I wasn't sure that I could avoid using rude words. The overbump has eased my pain somewhat. We let ourselves down in the middle third of the race, and our storming reach (4 lengths in 2 minutes! I've never wished that the reach was longer before!) wasn't quite enough to get us the overbump. What it did do, however, was give us confidence for the next day's racing.

Amelia has pre-empted my race report - WOOOO!!! Some excellent pushing-out meant we were up on Maggie off the start, and made further gains down first post reach. The pushed away however and got the bump on Downing, which meant contingency plan #155 (by far the preferred option) sprang into action. An excellent line from Abbi and some prompt clearing by Maggie took us clear of the carnage, and we powered down Plough reach with the overbump very much in mind. Calls of 'on station' as we came onto the reach meant it was very much on. My legs, arms and lungs were distinctly unhappy with me at this stage, but I informed them that there was no point wasting four minutes of pain for the sake of another two, it couldn't hurt much more right? (wrong). We gained fairly steadily down the reach, culminating in one of the best views I've had in ages - their cox sitting beside me with my blade lodged on their stern. Amazing! And especially satisfying to see (or not see) Queen's nowhere near. F*** over Trinity indeed!

Not our best row ever but by no means our worst; it did the job. Unfortunately Tit Hall stopped rowing once bumped, and as we were stuck on their stern, we both ended up drifting into the barges on the inside of grassy rather than clearing properly. This caused Maggie to take a very wide line around grassy and plough into the outside bank (though I think they eventually got away). Then came Downing being bumped by Clare with Queens in hot pursuit, meaning that when the bump occurred, all three of them went into the far bank. Christs were unwilling to hold it up and took out the Queens cox at full speed. Meanwhile we had all blades in on both sides and were precariously balanced between a barge and the oncoming crews whilst remaining wedged onto Tit Hall's stern. Eventually, after the klaxon eventually convinced Peterhouse to hold it up, we were able to extract ourselves and pull in for greenery. Certainly the most bumps carnage I've seen in a while - made for an exciting last bumps race. I miss rowing already.

Quite possibly our worst rowing ever. Terrible first stroke led to us never really finding our rhythm, but somehow we managed to spack our way past them and into the next round.

Event: Cambridge Autumn Head 2006 - Upper College IV+

A bit rough around the edges, but considering that it was twice the length of our previous longest piece, and at a significanlty higher rating than said piece, it wasn't a bad effort overall. Just a pity that we never managed to overtake that VIII on the reach...

Brilliant first race! We were settling into our rhythm while they were still doing 'wind 8...wind 9...', and from there we never looked back. Well we did actually, at them, spacking into the distance and inexplicably steering into our wash, while we pushed away with big phat (FaT??) meaty strokes. One of the best races I've had. Can't wait till tomorrow!

After expecting to have to battle a gusting head wind and, at the last minute, a potential downpour too, it was a surprisingly pleasant row. That may of course have been due to our slightly cruisey rating, but the power was there and after taking their bowball approximately 10 strokes after the stride, we were never in too much danger.

One word. Two syllables. Dispatched.

(I was going to write more, but Magnus has pretty much said it all already. A pity we had to use up some of our backlog of pushes, but they were damn effective!). I like winning, and I don't plan on stopping now...

Woooooo!!!!!!!!

Not much more to be said really. We knew their plan, and we had a better one - when they went up 2, we pushed, and guess what was more effective?!

I like rowing and winning and medals and I like it best when they all happen at once!

Event: Emma Sprints 2006 -

After some atrocious work by the marshalls, they unfortunately started the race having just been blown into the bank, and by the time they were pushed out again, Jesus had taken a lead of several lengths. However the girls rowed really well, gaining on Jesus throughout the course, but 500m just wasn't enough time to make up the distance. An unfortunate loss, and no reflection on the quality of the rowing!

Event: Emma Sprints 2006 -

They were out to show those marshalls what they were really made of, and certainly did so! Again the wind played havoc, although I'm not sure that a cross-wind coming from the meadow side can account for why Newnham (on the towpath side) twice steered into us near the start. The marshalls then restarted the race, choosing to convert our 1/2 length lead into a 2 seat lead for Newnham, but we responded in the best possible way by rowing right through them and finishing more than a length clear. An awesome row girls, you definitely made your point!

A very impressive row, given the lack of previous outings in this crew (total: 1 (a race)). You guys settled into a good rhythm early on, and maintained it throughout the race even when you were getting tired. Some fantastic coxing from Abi seemed to help keep the motivation up, and the push out of the railway bridge was superb - definition of the word "surge"!

I think this race was pretty good proof of why it is preferable to have outings. Although we'd remembered how to row together by Chesterton, we were also by that stage VERY tired. We managed to hold it together though, and there were some committed pushes despite the spack. And anyway, who cares, cos we won!!!

ps has anyone seen a dead duck somewhere near Chesterton??

Event: Fairbairn Cup 2006 - Senior VIIIs

Awesome result!!! The initial wind to 33 felt so comfortable I was afraid we were only at about 26, and there was some definite power heading towards Chesterton. It got a bit messy towards the end as we got tired, but it was obviously worth the effort. Magnus, I apologise for not *really* believing that we had gained on Caius!

Wow! I'm impressed with 2nd. This was the first (and probably last) time I've ever stroked a race, so I was particularly impressed at the rating staying up the whole way - I was just waiting for Sarah to say that we'd 'sagged'...then I remembered that she's a trifle more polite than Magnus ;)

A pretty tough race, but a good'un. Another pretty good start, despite the marshals thinking it was funny to sound the hooter at the same time as they asked us if we were ready. We were well up by the railway bridge, panicked a bit when they came back at us on their corner, but pulled away nicely towards the finish. Properly knackering though!

Event: Pembroke Regatta 2007 - 1st division

Much better. Some stern words after the first race followed by proper pre-race preparation meant we nailed the first stroke and never let up after that. Left Catz wallowing in our wake well before the railway bridge.

The two colleges melded well considering the lack of preparation. After a slightly shaky start you guys settled down to a good steady rhythm. There were occasional slips but fast recoveries! Overall you guys should be really proud of going the distance!
