It was so cold today.. couldn't feel my hands after the first two strokes, which is my excuse for not being the technically best crew out there today.. But gave it plently of FaT grunt, and made progress towards fitz II on the start. We got overlap round about the motorway bridge, but seemed to go forever after that! I finally managed to smack their stern (yes Jenners, stern :S) - that felt good! Didn't get their cox though.. ah well, next time :)
Woohoo, we're halfway there, keep it up girls! "Hi Ho..."

Not the greatest start ever, but caught up with Darwin II fairly quickly. They refused to acknowledge, and Dallis (bow) was too polite to give the darwin cox any "encouragement" :) but they finally gave in when ailinore (3) smacked their stern, just before the motorway bridge. Rowed home decked in greenery - woohoo! Well done girls, blades here we come!! "Hi-ho...."

Event: FaT/LMBC Punting Regatta 2004 - Women's Punters
Posted as: *Yea* we did
Event Link

Some underhand cheating by one of the Maggie "women" [sam, trying to grab our punt pole] resulted in him accidently tipping his own punter in, leaving us with the free run of the course. However, in true sporting style we waited for the rescue attempt, and resumed when they had sorted themselves out and caught up. The division had to be paused again halfway down the "reach", as Maggie tried to run down some tiny, innocent, defenceless ducklings. Much squealing and 'ooooh they're soo cute!' later, we got going again. FaT were first under Kitchen bridge, But an excellenct spinning technique by maggie saw them take the lead. It was pretty evenly matched down the home straight, but another desperate cheating manouevre [trying to pull themsleves along the bank] saw the Red Scum lose their paddle - which apparently makes quite a contribution to the speed of the punt. We stormed ahead and pulled out a victory from the brink of defeat. Ra Ra 1st&3rd!

Event: May Bumps 2004 - Saturday
Posted as: *Yea* we did
Event Link

Red Scum went down without much of a fight, kind of as expected. Shame we weren't following someone a bit better really.. But on the other hand, I felt relaxed and even fairly confident[!] off the start, stride felt nice, hit them before i even got out of breath. Bit dissapointingly easy really. But rolling pairs with a champagne bottle being passed along was fun, as was Andy's attempt at steering with a flag shoved down his lifejacket, and clutching a[nother] bottle. He's "Reasonably Happy" that we went up 6, if a bit disapointed not to have taught us the "pain" of bumps.

Event: May Bumps 2004 - Friday
Posted as: *Yea* we did
Event Link

Not exactly the best start or row we've ever had, but closed on corpus pretty quick. Clare Hall caught up a bit off the start, as expectec, but we held them off and pulled away after the motorway bridge. Bit [lot] of carnage caused us to bump just before first post corner, but the bump stood as we clearly would have got them anyway. Our first first boat so far! Ra Ra 1st&3rd etc. tomorrow = Maggie III, caught by Jesus III at the motorway bridge, so here's hoping it all goes well. P.s attendance at tomorrow's Stomp *compulsory*, girls, Maggie here we come!

No, andy, nobody *overbumps* at the motorway bridge :)
hehe! Felt really nice and powerful today, everybody really kept it going, even when we realised we might have to go [a bit] further today. Ah the little people in fur had it coming anyway!
*yea* we did!!!!!

Event: May Bumps 2004 - Wednesday
Posted as: Wants to stroke.
Event Link

*yea* we did! We haven't rowed together as a crew for quite a while now [yes yes my fault :P] so the balance etc wasn't great, but not a bad row at all. Andy's been telling us all term that he wants us to realise that nobody really bumps under the motorway bridge, bumps is suppoed to be about pain. So, sorry andy, will try [less?] harder tomorrow :) actually, tomorrow should be interesting, as clare hall got bumped because of an argument with the bank.. so.. we will see :S!

Event: Head of the Cam 2004 - Women's Other Mays
Posted as: Me Me Me Me Me.
Event Link

Not a great result, but not too bad for a stratch crew, considering we crabbed and had to easy on the reach, before starting up again. Solid start, gained a lot on fitz, pulled away from churchill, went a little limp after the railway bridge perhaps. We can and will do better!

Event: Maiden Sculls 2004 -
Posted as: Me Me Me Me Me.
Event Link

I'm really quite pleased with this result - it is worth noting that none of the following happened:
a) I crashed/sank
b) I fell in
c) I lost by the length of the reach

Apparently we were neck and neck for about 350m, when I sort-of-crabbed, and she gained a few strokes on me, which she held till the finish. All quite good fun really :)

Event: Lent Bumps 2004 - Friday

Event Link

*Yea* we did! Despite a shocking start, for the first time we really came together as a crew, and rowed well - calm relaxed and powerful. Basically the opposite of yesterday, lost at least half a length off the start, but thanks to the three(!) strides called by rachel, we kept it calm, and had overlap by the motorway bridge again, bumping just afterwards. With a good start tomorrow, we have every chance! Go First and Third - FaT women rock!!!

Event: Peterborough June Regatta 2005 - Senior3 VIIIs
Posted as: Lilie
Event Link

This was probably our best row of the day - we were pushed hard all the way, but wanted it enough, and pushed right through to the finish. It took a lot out of us though, and probably contributed to our loss in the final.
Worth mentioning that after the heats, we were the fastest women's crew there, including S2 for the time we posted in this race :D

Event: Foster Fairbairn Pairs 2005 - Women's 2-
Posted as: Lilie
Event Link

Wow, we couldn't have done this if we'd tried.. Well we did try.. sort of. Having spent all of yesterday joking about declaring a dead heat and refusing to rerow.. it happened. We both had a pretty shocking row from what I gather - Cath and Amelia clipping a platform thing, and Erica and I crashing into a barge. We certainly struggled with the evil headwind which sprang up today, and our technique was shocking. It was good that neither side felt we'd been advantaged/disadvangted. Woo! See you next year in the silver pairs!

Event: Head of the Cam 2005 - Women's Other Mays

Ooh my first pennant :)

A really good, solid row - felt confident and in control to the finish. No shame to come third to stacked Jesus and Caius boats. After all, we are way down at the head of the Lents 2nd division - bring on bumps!

Event: City Sprints 2005 - CRA Nv 4+

I've got a better [if perhaps slightly more controversial] suggestion Dan, perhaps men would have less issues with fitting their feet into women's shoes if they didn't break so many boats :)?

Event: Lowe Double Sculls 2005 - Women's 2x
Posted as: Lilie
Event Link

Well, if we were going straight, I'd say we would have been reasonably matched. However, given that they crabbed and crashed at least twice before first post we opened out a lead which saw us finish pretty much before they reached the top of the reach. "Won by the bow girl's steering" as commented on the finish line.
Ohh, exhausted- with Graham "motivational guru" Sills bank partying, for some reason I didn't slack off at all, and as a result almost died. Pretty good row I think, difficult to tell really cos of all the adrenaline.

A really good solid row, maybe a little spacky and unbalanced [but partly due to having to row in an 85kg mens 4] - well ahead of the field in out heat, finished with clear water.

SO so close. Very pleased to have beaten a stacked '9s crew, albeit by a tiny margin. Think we all *really* wanted it, and despite a few unbalanced strokes, and not being the prettiest crew there, when we lifted, the boat really moved, unlike the s3 final yesterday [though we hadn't already rowed 4000m today!] and Charlie just kept us pushing all the way, to take 9s at the line - awesome coxing for Charlie's 50th(?!) pot, he almost managed a straight line too ;)
Looking forward to pot hunting over the summer, Go Light and Dark Trinity, woohoo!

Probably our best race so far - certainly our best result! We were pretty nervous on the way up to the start, after being messed around and made to wait by Molesey for a good hour. We thankfully had a good start [this has proved to be a weaker point in some races] a nice stride where we took a bit of distance, and then held it on nice and steady down the course to beat them by a fairly narrow margin. AWESOME!! Afterwards noticed that they had decided to row/ponce with England blades.

Event: Bristol Avon Regatta 2005 - WS2 4+

Bit of a disappointing race really - after getting all fired up for elite, and wanting to make the double, we took quite a lot of distance from them during the draw strokes, and never felt threatened. A good solid row though. Of course we'd never have managed it without the Mexican call from the contigent on the bank :)

Event: Oxford City Sprint Regatta 2005 - Senior3 VIII

Crashed spectacularly into a pontoon off the start, leaving most of stroke side unable to row for about 10 strokes. Miraculously became un-entangled, re-drew, wound and strode, and sailed past Newnham [calling 'they've crashed; they're well behind..' etc.] in not-very-many strokes. Managed to gain clear water just as we crossed lines, narrowly avoiding blade clashing, but after that, Newnham were never really a threat.
Remarkably cohesive rowing, considering that this race was our first outing.

Event: Lent Bumps 2005 - Saturday

Bumped just on grassy after Newnham clipped both corners. Sure Pia will clarify in her essay/report, but a bit of a shame that we did bump so soon as the over bump may have been on again!! Woohoo though, 'proper' blades this time, bring on the headship next year hehe!
:D Ra Ra 1st and 3rd!

p.s well done Cath for now having an aggregate of 'staying level' :D
p.p.s and self congratulation for bow 4: up 64..!
p.p.p.s and of course super cox/rower Jenners: crossed blades and a rudder?!

Race went very much to plan, though there's probably still some room for improvement. We pulled away from them towards the end, weren't sure if we'd won or lost initially as we were too busy crasing into a Leys quad, with Erica not sure if we'd actually crossed the finish yet [we had, luckily]
oooh it's FaT on FaT tomorrow.. bring it ;)

Maggie bank party: 'Sorry girls, I've got a meeting, so I won't be able to watch you race clare in the final' Maggie boat: general smugness. [This seems to be a common theme for today, but I think we've proved that despite our non-poncy, non matching kit, and our somewhat wanky paddling, we actually go Quite Fast] They weren't smug for long. We were quick off the start, and took them down by about a length by the railway bridge, with them pushing back all down the reach. We relaxed a bit out of the railway bridge, but they didn't have enough left - took it up for a powerful and *extremely* satisfying finish. Very Good Race. Us: 'Ha'

Event: Pembroke Regatta 2005 - 1st division

Our start was maybe not as good as usual, but that's no real excuse. They were faster than us and deserved to win. We held them to just under a length along the reach, but they slowly pulled away to finish about 1 and a half lengths up. Second place is a Good Result [I had expected to be back in bed by about 9am, but we kind of kept winning] Very pleased to have got to the final.

Event: Lent Bumps 2005 - Thursday

Good start, bit of a spacky first stride [to 38]. Second stride went well though, and we started to reel them in comfortably. The nearly-but-not-quite-best-ever-first-post-corner by Jenners helped us along nicely, and as we approached grassy I could start to feel their wash. They took it quite wide, and we held our [again] good line round grassy to go straight into their stern. BUMP! Tomorrow will be HARD as Girton bumped an apparently spannering Tit Hall, depriving pembroke of their blades, but giving them a [probably] easy bump tomorrow. Well, we will see. For now - Ra ra 1st & 3rd!

This clearly doesn't work.. we rowed over head, drumped, _and_ over drumped. The second men are just bitter, we didn't cheat at all. That's a lie. I have no idea whether we cheated or not. Have managed to reconstruct most of the evening, using evidence I found this morning, such as various random bruises and a large lump on my head [Milton...?!] and a maggie, er, tie.

Event: RTT Regatta 2005 - Blade Swapping
Posted as: Lilie
Event Link

This was definitely my achievement of the day. Possibly even of my time at Cambridge. For the benefit of anyone who's yet to attempt this: The 'easy' bit is getting both blades on the same side. It's then that you realise that you're pretty much screwed. Especially if, like me, you're too short to reach the gates on a good day, never mind a 'trying desperately not to fall in because both my blades are on the same side of the boat' day. Managed to get the loose blade hooked under the gate and over my leg, then attempted to undo the screw with my other foot. Some bastard had screwed them up properly tight thhough, so this failed. Resorted to kneeling up in the boat and achieved the gate unscrewing, then a stylish quick switch of blades so that the other one was now hooked under the gate got me halfway. The rest involved a bit less faff, and ultimately resulted in success, hooray :D

In an effort to make Alex lose they gave me the Lola, which turned out to be impossible to row - pitched funnily to one side and very unstable. I suggested a more appropriate handicap would be to start Eton Boy off with his blades the wrong way round, then he could either switch them and row properly, or have to row with them back to front. Either way, he probably still would have won, to be fair.
Thanks to Eton boy for his advice on the start line "just rememeber the wobble is due to you, not the boat".

The sculling was actually going pretty well, and I even seemed to not be losing too much ground until the umpire started telling me to steer - straight[ish] lines are apparently all i can cope with when sculling - can we hold this at Dorney next year?? Even then it wasn't too crab worthy, by my standards- quite a pleasing row really.

This was some kind of special quasi-overbump torpids style, which meant we had to row the log about 1000m, which is a long way when you're rowing in a tree trunk. Still only went up one though. crazy as.

Woo - mini blades, pleased! The ChCh boys seemed impressed and surprised saying they'd never seen that boat go so fast. And once it got going, I can't see that anything much would stop it- if only these hadn't been non-contact bumps we could've done some serious damage! I think the boys could still be persuaded to donate "the Log" to us as a souvenir, I've become quite attached to it..
Thanks to the them for having us over and lending us the boat, taking us to "formal" etc. etc. Though we'll leave mentions of escapades in showers for another thread ;)
Newnham also seemed rather surprised that we were doing so well, which was pleasing.

Well, all our opposition wimped out of racing us, so we raced the Men's Forster-Fairbairn pairs final instead of the Women's Madgelene pairs. We reckon losing by 22s to the FaT pair ain't too bad, and Eton Boy thought it was enough to earn us the won-by-defualt Uni medals.. Such a shame not to be able to race actual opposition, but we had a pretty good race. Despite our start consisting of "draw 1.. er.. wind some? go fast.." we went off pretty swiftly, and managed to pretty much hold the boys until about halfway down first post reach [apparently]. Lucw took awesome lines round all the corners, and we even managed to take it up two for the finish. Only one mini crab - our rowing was qualiteeeee. Bring on the summer!

And thankyou for tolerating my crazy schedule, trying to fit in far too many outings (and the same goes to W1)!

Watching Queens' spanner into the distance as we (I) took Iain's advice and set up a nice long strong rhythm. He may have even said that certain members of CUW were rowing 'well'. This may on the other hand be a vicious rumour. Ground down Clare over the course, excellent coxing from Abbi gave us the advantage we needed to take them with not a huge distance left to the finish.

Mike tells me I am doing really well, as this is both grammatically correct AND makes some sense, despite the fact that I am WASTED, largely due to the 20L of beer we won in this joke of a race.

Third to Jesus (although they had a rather sneaky not-really-actually-at-the-university-6-girl) by 2 ses and Queens' by a second which was a bit gutting. Thought we had a strong row though, perhaps helped by the fact that we'd controversially stuck to the same crew as we'd had for the last two outings. Few more outings together and we might even go a bit faster. We'd better go a bit faster. Bah.

Overall we rocked, though I'm glad they took off the changeovers cos I sucked at that. Just wait till we get all that power in a boat!

p.s. long live FaTAMS, (the adaptive multi-sport society - as though you had to ask). I think we should have an adaptive category at every future bpbc vs fat match. if not, I might sue you for discrimination. consider yourself warned.

Well. Bit of a wank start due to me winding it up rather too much, despite telling Erica reassuringly that we'd be fine as long as we kept our length, stayed relaxed, and just found the awesome rhythm we had in our 'cheating' outing (well we had to try the corners at least once, even if we forgot to practice starts..!). She duly called 'length' and 'relax', which finally happened in about plough reach. They'd definitely settled to a stronger, longer rhythm and caught up with us round the corners, but once we were on the reach we really settled down, found a good rhythm and gave it a some good FaT grunt into the wind. We pulled away from them steadily and pipped them at the post, by a definite margin, which Mark Jacobs (despite not having taken times for this race - the only one he hasn't managed to today apparently, nor timing the difference between the finish marshalls' hands) decided was 'about 1 second, therefore a dead heat'. I got rather angry, rather bluntly suggested that there's no way that he could know whether it was more or less than a second without timing it, and therefore contested his judgement. We await the results of this.. I'll restrain myself from saying any more until after then.
Thanks to the Jesus girls for a good race, looked like a v nice rhythm you had there (sorry Erica), though if you want to 'scare us' before the start you'll have to do a better job than paddling by and waving ;)
