Thanks should go to all the people who have coached us this term and to the many coxes we've had. Also thanks to the great bank party we had today, and the extra supporters going down the reach. We couldn't have done it without you all!
Now we concentrate on getting even better by the Mays.

We're all very much looking forward to tomorrow, where we can hopefully do ourselves justice and get that last bump.

Also unfortunate that the course is so unbelievably short!

Girton had moved over slightly onto our station, so I was aware there was some blade clashing occurring on strokeside at the same time as Cath's blade was about an inch away from the hard on bowside. But we squeezed through and won anyway :)
(No call for "I can see the finish" because I couldn't at any point in the race)
The bombardment by huge hailstones was not nice.

As we disappeared round grassy, we saw them entering 1st first, before (as they told us later) they parked in the bank soon after. We never saw them again, but there was no chance I was willing to slack off with Graham driving us on from the bank.
Apparently I was spotted as "isn't that your cox?" though. I hope it's not illegal to enter with this kind of natural steering advantage, I claim it's balanced by the power disadvantage!

Excuses aside, I think we both agree it was a pretty ropey race. When looking at the result, take into account our stopping for a while as we got onto the reach where the wind blew us into the bank :( We then stopped again shortly afterwards when I let go of ones of my blades (not deliberately of course, but my arms *really* didn't work).

Ever.
This is not some kind of Steve Redgrave never. I am not racing again in a single scull if it's that windy unless my technique has somehow managed to improve considerably. (Ok, so possibly that is a get out clause.....)
I was feeling only mildly terrified after my first head piece (completed yesterday) went fairly well - including spectacular overtaking of the grey barge going round Ditton. Still, got to the start (slowly) with one small hitting of the bank incident. Was patronised (probably rightly) as I marshalled by *the* Churchill coach who obviously thought I was incompetent (again, probably rightly so).
So, set off into the gusty headwind, rating lower than I had planned due to fear of falling in. Got round first post corner taking an ok line, got round grassy after several near crab experiences in the gut and round the corner. Realised the bloke in the clinker behind me was catching me up fairly quickly so tried to go faster - bad plan, so settled back into my old rhythm. Got round Ditton, slightly wide, straight into the reach where I made the mistake of looking at the bank (mistake because it was noticably not moving relative to me!) Tried to push off the clinker but he came past on the reach. Got to the railway bridge and still couldn't see Mark (was determined to beat him!) so things were looking up. Started going for the finish. (I'd predicted ~60 strokes from the railway bridge, and counted down every one) Rounded the final bend and some spirited cheering helped as I crossed the line..... finally!
As far as I'm aware, Mark managed to beat me by a mere 1 second and I possibly beat a mens shell (or two). Think the other women entered were of slightly higher calibre than me though.

We got exactly the same time as the last race. There was definitely more of a head wind though and the majority of crews posted slower times for this leg.
Overall I think it was a good race. We did a slight 'Amy Wallace' going round first post corner but recovered quickly, and took a good line through the rest of the course (even if I do say so myself!) Was feeling really nice down the reach as we pulled away from the chasing crews. Rowing in a double is fun :)

Gusty wind on the start and slight confusion from the bank about the bow-rigged nature of our boat meant a dropped bung (oops!) and a spacky first 3 strokes. We brought it back together and kept approximately on distance with Pembroke down 1st post reach until they inevitably hit Trinity Hall before the corner. In a last gasp attempt to avoid the bump, Tit Hall caused me a couple of heart stopping moments by moving across the river. Both crews cleared quickly though and (with a little gentle encouragement) pulled their blades out of our path.
Then was my first sight of Girton, i'd guess about 4-5 lengths ahead.
Into the corner a powerful ratio shift took us to our race rhythm. A couple of good corners later, we were 3 lengths away and gaining fast.
More bumped out crews on the entrance to Ditton were 'advised' by Iain to move their blades, so we could get a good line, eating into Girton's lead as they went slightly wide.
The explosion of power as we came onto the reach was amazing, and spurred on by Iain's 'you're inside distance' call, we knew that we were going to do it. It happened so quickly after that, a length.... half a length...... quarter....overlap.....BUMP!!!!!
A truly great achievement from everyone in the boat :)

Sometimes bumps racing just isn't fair.
Let's make sure we row as confidently on Friday and see what happens.

Their crab meant the last half a length was easier than expected, but were gaining consistently from the start. A slightly scrappy bit of rowing to the bridge, but the second stride felt really good!
And I think we've given a new meaning to club stripeys :)

We decided afterwards that the power was a bit inconsistent, but there was a lot of effort put in to make it hard for a men's pair to overtake us. Timing was generally good, balance improved throughout showing the potential for this to be a good term for W2.
