'Twas the day of Fairbairn's,
When at the start line
A FaT crew was sitting
And biding their time.

They waited and waited
For the marshal to say:
"Row on First and Third",
And they went on their way.

Quick they built pressure,
Their technique sans flaws,
And push after push
They made without pause.

In spite of crosswinds,
No o'erheads were caught
As they pushed for that vict'ry
That so long had been sought.

And then, on The Reach,
From cox came a cry:
"Let's do this for Marcus;
We win or we die."

Their lift was immense,
Some say the boat flew,
Which pushed them e'er closer
To Jesus first crew.

As they crossed the finish,
The cox looked around
But St Catharine's crew:
Nowhere to be found.

Yet the danger was Maggie,
Their antagonist and foe:
From previous races,
They knew they could row.

FaT parked up their boat,
Stepped out on dry land,
The air thick with tension
That no one could stand.

"That rowing was fast,"
Coach, Marcus, stated.
"But now we must wait."
And with that, they waited.

They rowed back to the House,
Where results were confirmed:
FaT crowned triumphant,
And that they had earned.

The cox was thrown in.
Hypothermia? Maybe:
Even hours later
He's still slightly shaky.

But the girls did FaT proud:
Not once did they dither!
They're truly the fastest
Of crews on the river.

This wasn't the start we wanted.

We never thought this would happen.

We knew Emma were quick;

We had that proved to us today.

Emma were more experienced than us.

Emma were quicker than us.

And that showed.

We were unlucky,

But there is much to be learned from today.

We've kept our heads high;

Let's break Christs tomorrow

And improve our Bumps records.

Maggie, behind us,

Had said they were confident.

We bumped on First Post.

This start was our best.

Rate high, and the girls moved boat.

Wow. My first whistle.

Christs moved on Medwards

But we moved faster than them.

We bumped on First Post.

Maggie were three lengths

Away when we hit Christs bow.

They thought they were fast?

Today

we had seven

who had never

been on

the Tideway.

My lines

were probably

even worse

than these ones.

Next year

we'll have more

experience

and speed;

next year

we'll place

higher.

Beth

almost went

to hospital

but still pushed.

Do the men

still

think girls

don't have grit?

This was a very impressive result; finishing just 12 seconds off NM1 is a huge achievement, especially with Luca's broken seat only allowing him to move only between front-stops and half-slide. This has capped off an excellent term of rowing for NM2, who have placed 1st, 2nd, and 2nd in their three events.

A pleasantly high result given the circumstances. The race fell midway through a bout of illness that hit the crew, meaning the crew had two subs for the race—one of which was ill themselves.

In the actual race, the rate didn't come up quite as quickly as we'd have liked, but we kept it fairly punchy for the first 1.2 km. Unfortunately, at this point, the after-effects of a week of illness started to show; the power started to drain and my coughing, albeit rhythmic, did little to motivate the crew.

The overall time wasn't representative of our speed, but it wasn't too disappointing relative to other crews who were competing.

While our first race was bad in terms of the number of subs, the subbing of a sub meant that only three of the rowers were actually in their usual positions for our second race.

The story of the race was similar to that of the first but with substantially less of the rhythmic coughing that characterised the first. The tiredness of having already raced once showed and, while the rate was kept high, the stroke length was not. Missed catches, and missed strokes, ultimately lead to the time being 13 seconds slower than the first race.

At least we kept our boat hole-free...

A rather unusual race, as races go. First, with the cannons locked inside someone’s house and the owner locked outside of the house, an alternative system had to be implemented. A representative from every crew simultaneously set up a stopwatch, and the bank parties called the cannons themselves.

Unfortunately, the race was very short-lived. Fifty metres in, they rowed past Jesus’ station, who were unable to race after issues with their cox box. Praise should go to Ellie, who paid attention in the Coxes’ Meeting, didn’t row into a stationary crew, and pulled in quickly to claim the bump.

M3 quickly gained a length on Trinity Hall II but, on the corners, they unfortunately succumbed to a loss of power and timing, resulting in them being bumped approaching Ditton. The bump-back on Friday is definitely achievable!

Bumps before First Post aren’t meant to happen this high in Division 1. This was some fast rowing.

C.f. race report for W1. A very good day for FaT.

We seemed to generally keep pace with St. Edmund’s (for the most part), but didn’t quite turn it up enough on the pushes, and occasional mistakes meant we dropped back slightly. We pulled away on the corners and almost made it away from them on Ditton, but our stern was caught by the St. Edmund’s bow’s blade’s tip, after many strokes with significant overlap.

The heavy rain had a telling effect on the boat, with the speakers becoming muffled before the race had started. The start was suboptimal; a very taught chain led to the boat swinging out slightly to stroke side and a couple of missed strokes from stroke side exacerbated this. The start was fast, and we initially moved on St. Edmund’s, but Darwin then turned up the heat and caught us following the exit of Grassy.
