I must add that I'm impressed by that start that caught our bow pair taking taps and Robinson at backstops. Well done, especially Katie!

As for the race, keeping the power, technique and timing with nothing to push against is a great confidence boost!

With a composed rolling start (amazing stationary rollup!) we were at rate within 10 strokes. Another up 2 got them to 29.5, which they maintained throughout the course with a few pushes in the middle and out of the corners to get it back up.
If Jack wasn't on the bank with me, I'd keep calling rate ups because of how composed and light the crew looked - have you ever heard a novice crew saying the boat didn't feel heavy and they were all working together?! And believe me, they were working.
Under the railway bridge, with Selwyin crew at a bumps distance, the rate spontaniously crept up with the pressure, and another push was needed to empty the tank in the last minute.
Katie was very professional with a sack of motivational calls while steering accurately.
Special credit to our hero Nina (Voight) who rowed injured and reminded me of Charlotte SP, having been replaced on the row back.
I cannot describe how happy we all were with this race, and rowing back with them was one of my enjoyable rows - with the rythm set by carols, the boat was sat and still moving among the dazzled crews.

On the Reach our race turned into a full length bumps race, rarely seen in women's divisions. We can really be proud of how we pushed off Christ's, rating 33-34 (?!)

However, this shows that we didn't have to get ourselves into that position in the first place and to do well in Lents, we'll have to push hard without having a boat at our stern. That second half is something to build upon!

Mark gave us a lot to think about on the row down (thank you!), being particularly persistent about eliminating the rush up the slide. Despite the long and carefree queueing, I think this took effect in the race. By carefree I mean focusing on keeping our hands warm and being reminded that hypothermia is one of eight causes of cardiac arrest.

The awareness of how short the race was made us really attack it in the way we hadn't done before, so the Reach felt strong and tidy. A very bad stroke under the Railway Bridge threw us off and we never really got it back completely, but the commitment was still there. Winding for the finish (bump) is something we have to work on, but this performance was definitely a step up.

The general consensus was that starting Bumps like that, or even more front-loaded, was perfectly fine, and that we have to implement that into our training. Definitely the best piece we've done so far.

There was a lot of incertitude around Robinson Head - it was W2's first race, in first division, the course was modified, conditions on both the river and towpath unknown. The queueing and spinning was happening in the rolling start area, so Alex had to make up for other coxes' incompetence and spin with bow side blades in the ice.

The race was surprisingly composed for such circumstances. That's actually the best description for it, especially since Rachel and I were disadvantaged by jogging in the snow. The rowing was neat and rate 30-32 looked comfortable (note that we've had very little water time this term), but there was a notable drop down in power around the Railway Bridge and Alex wasn't happy with responses to her pressure calls. Having wrong information about the finish line didn't help, which might affect her overall impression.

The finish improved the picture and showed the potential of this crew. This potential is the reason I'm being reserved - it's a great crew, the girls can row together, and even with an average performance, they managed to win the division!

Many thanks to Rachel and Iain for bank partying (Iain also gave a couple of individual points that can make the boat go faster). The result is a genuine springboard, and with a bit more 'oomph' and a couple of miles, we're looking at great Bumps!

Event: Lent Bumps Getting-on Race 2012 -

Since our W2 bailed out of the Getting on Race and didn't steal any rowers, we had a nice full strong crew.

For some reason the crews were sent off in starting order, which meant that 30 crews had to spin and queue at the Lock, and we all know how coxing in bottom women's divisions is. Luckily it was a beautiful calm day, so serious carnage was avoided and the marshalling itself quite enjoyable.

The girls set off nice and strong with stern pair's blades approximately in bow pair's puddles, but as the pain kicked in around first post we lost any cover. Pushes out of the corners worked really well and recovered some of the rythm, which manifested in the distance from LMBC III behind us.

The commitment was definitely there, but Rachel insists, and I agree that we would have been better off with more cover at a slightly lower rate. It would be ideal if we could get the relaxation on the slide in the few outings before Bumps without pressure dropping off.

Time to start binning lectures and rearranging supervisions. With exceptionally little water time this term, W3 can make up a lot of distance in 3 outings. Seeing as the order is based on the Getting on Race, this means - BUMPS!

There's not much to add to the report itself, but the flavour is very different after sleeping on it. After some initial wobbles, all we could feel until Ditton was real commitment to following the race plan, grinding them down inch by inch. Michael and the bank parties report some misterious occurences around Grassy affecting the line, but not the feeling in the boat.

The inch-by-inch approach meant that we didn't have a whole lot to give once we heard the overlap whistle, but the rise in speed was noticeable and we emptied the tank. Drained it completely. In such a situation, with legs all over the place, not even the 2-3 lengths ahead of Christ's were enough to feel comfortable (pardon my incapability to judge from the 4 seat).

Our bank parties found this race great fun, so they were very excited right away. We were overwhelmed with thoughts and questions about what would / could have happened if... But after thorough investigation, the answer is - not much. We still have enough time to achieve our target, and knowing that we can bump Pembroke and hold Christ's off means that we should just go out and do everything as we did today.
