Once more unto the reach, dear friends, once more!

Also, I hope the Queens strokeman is OK.

A slightly disappointing row where we failed to find the speed we had found the weekend before. We started reasonably cleanly, but settled onto a rushed and not particularly effective rhythm. We were a second or two down coming past the Plough, however our attempts to raise boat-speed resulted in more rush and less speed, resulting in Catz gaining significantly on the reach. We should be going plenty faster by Lents.

An encouraging result. We raced as a scratch crew with almost all of the crew racing in 4s a hour earlier, so we were not expecting the perfect row. The row itself was a little scrappy, but showed good promise, with good send through the finish. I'm looking forward to seeing what gains in speed we can make over the next two weeks as we start training in the 8 properly, having spent most of the preceding term doing a lot of 4s work.

Having done seat racing the day before, and finding some fairly significant speed disparities (~20s over 1k) between my stroke-side and bow-side it was decided that it would make sense to swap the sides of 3 people in this 4 for this race (in the best tradition of the coxless 4). Given this change it was a pretty decent row, but we probably could have gone a lot faster if we had had a chance to train in this combination, or on the relevant sides!

Polished, composed, sharp and well-marshalled are adjectives that could not be used to describe this race. This was a scratch combination and it showed through the finish timing and finesse, there was however a great deal of commitment throughout the boat and many encouraging signs. Given a couple of weeks to tighten up the rowing, we should be able add a lot more style and speed to our rowing.  A pleasing result which bodes well for the rest of the term and year.

Clare M2 had merely adopted the wash. First and Third M2 had been born in it, moulded by it, we didn't see a well-sat boat until the first day of bumps, by then it was nothing to us but a luxury. The wash betrays you because it belongs to us.
