The start was decent, and we got the rating up to 34SPM. We took 20 before we settled the rating and pressure to race pace (though the settle felt a bit like a continuation of the first 20 strokes). Coming around the corners was not bad, and we could see FaT A in front of us. The 10s on the straights helped pull the rhythm together, and the 10 at grassy was by far the best one. We could hear Phil yelling that we were 3 seconds up on the other 4+ around the Plough Reach.
Our rating slipped down to 32 a few times, but there was enough of a strong rhythm established that the boys were able to get it back up to 34 each time I called it up. We walked up on and through Clare's 4+ easily, coming off Ditton Corner, and had a good 20 at the halfway point. Most of the focus coming down the Long Reach was moving up on FaT A. Length on the recovery and swinging the backs into the bows seemed to be the most key calls, as this allowed us to have some really smooth stretches. The technique was a bit sloppy at times, but we were still moving well, and 34 felt really smooth.
The wind-up was a bit lacking, as it was the only thing we hadn't worked on. The last few strokes, the set was a bit off because we were directly in the wash of FaT A. By the time we crossed the finish line, we had eaten up most of the open water between us.

Well, I didn't get passed (oh, right. I started last in the division), and I stuck to the plan. Rated 29-30 downstream, kept it strong and didn't try to catch up to the massive junior sculler who was ahead of me. Upstream, rated 30-31 and steered my best line yet. Except for almost hitting the tree at grassy corner because I took it a bit close. Took it up for the finish, gave a good growl at the end, and am feeling pretty good. Not bad for a couple weeks' training.

If Christian had paid any attention, he'd realise there was no one else in my division. He'll also find his math is wrong... or he's calling me a man.

Messy, but exciting! Girton's cox went very wide on the approach to First Post Corner. Sonya had the common sense to keep her line and took a nice corner, breaking down the 1.5 lengths of open water Girton were maintaining. As soon as the whistle went, the boys snapped into action and made their move very quickly and Mo made solid contact with Girton's canvas before they could bump Selwyn.

Now, boys, would you be so kind as to pull over BEFORE you start the celebratory cheering tomorrow... gave the umpires a bit of a scare.

I really really wanted to blow the whistle, as I didn't have the opportunity to do so, yesterday. I requested a bump before First Post Corner and M3 delivered. Well done, guys!

Perseverance and determination continued to move the boat. Good effort, today, lads! Tomorrow: fresh new race. I'm feeling a little religious now... let's get Jesus.

Power and heart drove the boat within striking distance of Selwyn, but the endurance just wasn't there. Churchill thought they were going to catch you on the downswing, but you held them off. Fantastic effort all week, but today was stellar. Heads up, be proud of what you've achieved this term, boys!

It was somewhere between a third of a length to half a length down. Not a bad race, considering we were basically a scratch crew and the other boat had some massive people in it!

Just before I got to the river, I stopped by Hobbs to buy a whistle, just in case. I'm very glad to have had the opportunity to use it. Tomorrow is another day, so let's go get them!
