We had a solid rhythm and row through the gut and round Grassy before the distance began to decrease between us and Magdalene. Darwin were sitting outside distance and were therefore posing no threat. A push from Alex was responded to well by the crew and subsequent superior steering led us round Ditton with a length clear water. A large proportion of the reach was needed to reel them in but we finally succeeded and returned the favour from last year.

Peterhouse II managed to leave the bank at a 45 degree angle meaning that they crashed and were bumped within a matter of strokes. Subsequent bumps behind 1st and 3rd left the river clear and stress free (relatively) and allowed the girls to row really well through the gut and into grassy. Unfortunately the boat wouldn't go round the corner and they momentarily paused on the outside of the bend. They got moving again and made it to Ditton before being hit by Downing.
Everyone was really impressed on the bank with an extrememely positive and hearty race from what was essentially an inexperienced crew.
Well done girls, you did us proud today!

We were starting at station 4 and knew that Robinson were awful and up for spoons so the race plan was simple: bump them as close to first post corner as possible. Spirits were high and the rowing very neat and tidy with a definite air of determination about it. Anna F kept the complaceny low by reminding us that Binson could just have had a shocker yesterday and that we might have to work for it. Thankfully though, she was wrong and we did bump on first post corner. I couldn't tell you what happened in the race as it was too short but comments from the bank were along the lines of: a 'text book bump' if there could ever be such a thing; and the 'fastest crew in W2'.

The row home was fantastic - champagne in the boat, cheering from the bank, greenery in your hair and smiles all round. For the first time I was actually quite sad that the Bumps were finishing and desperately wanted another couple of days racing just to get us back into W1 and maybe finish some business with Magdalene. However, it isn't to be so next year's crew will just have to settle the score.

In conclusion: one of my favourite days on the river and a fabulous way to end the year on the Cam.

We were drawn against a very strong Trinity College Dublin crew who reached the finals and lost to Durham University. Apparently the commentary from the launch said that we slowed down when we hit the strong head wind coming out past the island whereas the TCD girls (who were quite big and far more technically competent) did not. However, we put in a good fight and kept the losing margin as small as we could but unfortunately were never really in with a chance of winning.

After three years and two technical row overs chasing Churchill we finally bumped them in 23 strokes and before the motorway bridge. A fantastic row that saw us reaching the potential that we tried to get yesterday but didn't quite achieve. My first bump, what more can I say....

Well, officially it was Saturday and it was the second rerow of the day....

Row #1: we were going for the bump on Newhall but Queens' and Christs got in the way so there was a rerow from Clare down.

Rerow #1: in theory we had nothing to lose as Newhall was infront, Pembroke was in front of them and then Clare was at the start of the rerow. Churchill had been nowhere to be seen on Friday so we were hoping for at least a bump. Unfortunately Newhall messed up pulling into the bank having bumped Pembroke and allowed Clare an easy row over. Another rerow was called for...

Rerow #2: Us in front followed by Churchill then Catz and Girton at the rear. Girton and Churchill were out for blood having both been bumped by the respective crews in front of them. Despite diversive coxing tactics from Julia, there was nothing we could do to get away from a determined Churchill crew, finally conceding in the plough reach.

Row no three of the day and yet again we were stuck between Churchill and Girton. Baz was back in the coxes seat and the crew was out to show Churchill that we meant to bump them on Thursday and that their flukey row earlier was due to the substitution they had made for the rerow. Unfortunately they were still on a high from their earlier bump and managed to bump out Pembroke leaving us no choice but to defend our place from Girton. We put up a good fight and gave as much as we could so the fact that we had to give in to Girton at the top of the reach was a disappointment to say the least. Next year we will be back.....

I wasn't there so a description comes second hand...

Apparently there was a very controlled start which was followed quickly by cutting the distance to a length. They reduced it to a canvas and held it for a while before steadily reeling Caius in to get a bump by 1st post corner.

The boat raced well for a crew that hasn't been out together before and was very chuffed with 3rd! Coping really well in the wind with a gutsy row, we beat both Girton and Churchill who are either side of us for the start of the Bumps.... A good basis to start the year on.

Event: Newnham Short Course 2002 - 2nd division

In the red flag conditions the crew coped admirably with the wind. Coming fourth overall and losing only to LMBC II, Emma II and Christs II this was a great result for the first race of term.

This was a strong determined row against one of this term's fastest women's crews. They took a lead from the start and so it was a case of not letting them extend it too much. A series of strong pushes prevented them from having an easy win.

It was a great race - pushing off Emma all the way down the Reach and holding them off to the finish. The crew rowed really well together and put in a lot of effort so I was pleased with the result.

This was a good race; starting from behind on the inside lane of the curved course, the crew worked well and drew level with Keble over the first part of the race. Keble worked hard in the second half, however, and we just weren't quite strong enough to continue our advances. We lost by a length or two.

Merton had just beaten Twickenham comfortably in S2, so we weren't expecting an easy row. We lost by 2 or 3 lengths but we had a really strong and much more relaxed rhythm than the last 3 races so were pleased with the race even if the result wasn't in our favour. All in all, a great day's racing.
